Purminerals color correcting primer is the absolute best, it neutralizes under eye darkness as well as the redness from zits and acne scars. I honestly could wear it alone, it stays on the entire day and basically does the job of foundation. My skin has never looked more even, it keeps oil at bay and yet is not drying whatsoever.

I really love The Body Shop Skin Primer Matte It. It feels like the Smashbox primer, but at a much better price (especially if you catch one of the 50% off sales).

I never buy anything sally hansen, but that is a good price. I was surprised it got a good rating. As much as smashbox feels great i will probably check out another brand from all these listings.

The DHC Velvet Skin coat is a good primer. Prime Time too. I was very surprised not to see Clarins Beauty Flash Balm on this list. It is the gold standard. Any time I have a client that does not take care of their skin I use it first. It is very forgiving and makes skin look like silk.

My co-worker has amazing looking skin and told me she applies a thin layer of milk of magnesia as a primer on her oily skin. I have not tried it yet, but there are some application videos that can be found on you tube...the key is not applying too much.

I have tried several of those primers and they did not work for me. I know there are thousands of primers out there, so most go untested. My absolute staple is Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF15. I even use it when I'm hiking because it's gentle on my sensitive skin and protects it from the sun. My makeup looks fresh until I wash it off at night with this primer.

The Smashbox primers have not worked for me at all. I am suprised not to see Hourglass Mineral Veil because it is amazing. I'd love to try the Napoleon primer, but I've not seen that brand in stores or on any beauty retail websites.

So, I think the biggest thing I'm taking from this article is that primer is expensive!! However, as I am a make-up sucker, I really want to try the Arbonne primer. I have tried smash-box and I found that it was weirdly flaky. MAC seems way more convenient to try than Arbonne, so I may have to go with that as an intermediate step...

It's endless isn't it.....how many layers can we possibly put on. I admit I have at least 5 primers at present. Some are mentioned in this article. But how do I really feel about them....well, the silky feel is just silicone, making your skin feel like liquid silk. But the reality is if you use a good moisturizer this step can be skipped. After what I have is gone I am going with the idea, less is more and just use good product. I like that.

i hate the laura mercier primer, i honestly think IT DID NOT DO ANYTHING to my skin. my skin felt more oily, it did not do what a primer is suppose to do. i think cover fx should be on this, i highly recommend it. it's suppose to be for acne prone and oily skin type but i think it works for all skin type. kept my make up last longer compared to the other ones i have used (smashbox, make up forever, mac, amazing cosmetics, bare minerals, lancome). also tarte is good. if you have really oily skin, this might sound crazy, use a little bit of deodorant , it works!!!!!

Good for future purchasing reference! Thanks for sharing. I have used MUFE Primer and also Smashbox Photo Finish primer, and I must say that they are really good. I know it sounds crazy, and definitely not high-end, but MONISTAT CHAFING GEL really opened my eyes. It's shockingly good.

If you have dry skin like myself, and are looking for a primer, I would suggest Dior Skinflash. It feels very light and refreshing, almost like a moisturizer.

the laura mercier face primer and the mac face primer are by far my favorites. the mac face primer is awesome because it was spf 50 but the laura face primers are also great because they have more than one primer to choose from so no matter your skin type they have something foe everyone. my favorite is the hydrating primer but laura m. also has a mineral primer, a illuminating primer, a oil free primer and a radiance primer. also all her products are made for sensitive skin; hypo allergenic, and are perfect for anyone who suffers from rosacea.

I don't understand the difference between "luminizing glow" and "oily shine." I am 53, my skin is still as line-free as a a teenager's, and ANY variety of moisturizer makes me break out like a teenager! However, I'd love to reduce the appearance of the large pores on my nose. I never used a primer (even though I am an ind. consultant for Arbonne) until my sister who\'s a esthetician & makeup artist recommended I use one. I tried ours & have never looked back! I remember when Arbonne came out with the primer. I couldn't believe that I would want another layer...already using their skin care...then I tried it. It's a no layer layer that does what it says and feels like velvet. Im happy to answer any questions you might have about this and other products!

I have VERY oily skin, so before applying makeup I cleanse lightly moisturize and then apply Milk of Magnesia. My makeup last all day and I don't get shiny. Whereas before I was blotting constantly! Learning this trick has saved my face. :)

This is a very helpful list. Smashbox is my favorite, but it would be great if they incorporated drugstore primers as well. Rimmel and L'Oreal make excellent primers. Avon too!

I really like Hourglass Mineral Veil primer. It's well worth the cost. It doesn't feel greasy and it's paraben-free, sulfate-free, etc. It was surprising when people said I had a nice glow to my face.

To those who find this rating surprising I'd suggest you try the Arbonne Makeup Primer before you brush it aside. I have yet to find a client who tells me that once they tried Arbonne's primer that they would go back to what they were using before....the proof is in the pudding, or in this case the above-mentioned article.

I have yet to find a primer worth using. None of them made any difference I could see, and many were too slick or drying or contained allergens and/or irritants. I'll check out those in this list that I haven't tried, but I will be surprised if any make a positive difference.

The Arbonne primer is the best I have ever tried and it doesn't contain any silicone or nylon which a number of the other lines carry (those block your pores). I can't live without it!

SmashBox Photo Finish Color Correcting primer is the BOMB!!! Have been using it for years-very hydrating-peachy color which gives the skin warmth and a very light feel on the face-non-greasy-sometimes I go out with just the primer on and no makeup-but that's only to the supermarket.

smashbox & MAC are fantastic primers. for eye i would recommend Urben Decay. depending on the skin, oily/acne prone/dry skin needs a lot of priming job to create a good canvas to start with ... speaking from a pro makeup artist stand point :)

I like a lot of these brands, but at times find it so expensive and can hardly justify paying that much for a primer. That's why I use the Hard Candy Sheer Envy primer. its super affordable, effective, and personally i think it lasts longer than the expensive primers/

I've tried most of these and I'm partial to DHC. I stumbled across their website years ago and Velvet Skin was one of the free samples I ordered. It's my absolute favorite. I usually don't have to wear foundation with it. Really great stuff!!

I've tried several of these products and they didn't hold a candle to Per-fekt skin perfecting gel for my fair, large pored skin. I may try the Clarins though as the consistency sounded good.

Ive never used a primer. Why? Lol i didnt know they existed. I always thought a good moisturizer was good enough but when it gets warm in Texas, my make up just melts away. Maybe people are just different because my mother doesnt wear a primer and her makeup stays on flawlessly...i guess shes just more experienced than me. Thankyou for this article, i never knew it could be so helpful combating imperfections like that. Move out of the way concealer, i believe a primer will be my best friend :)

Does this items have a fragrance? I usually use Physicians Formula because I get red blotches from meds under my little dab of foundation to cover the green tint. It gives a flawless look, especially with a powder blotting sheet or loose powder.

i have tried alot of primers out there. its kinda hard to choose a really good one since i have oily skin. i have used smashbox photo finish primer the (oil free), tarte primer wasnt making my makeup last, but i still love tarte. im just looking for a good primer that will make my makeup last and make my pores look smaller.

Smashbox Photo FInish primers, and Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch made my skin look great for about half an hour. Then they made my skin look like an oily mess. Gross. MAC Prep+Prime Face SPF 50 is great stuff though!

I had been using the Smashbox primer for about two years, when I decided I needed something more to cover my pores. I tried two primers at a time on each side of my face, until I was left with only one. I tried the Napolean, Smashbox, Tarte , Urban Decay and then finally the Benefit Porefection. When I finally got to the last primer it was such an easy decision. The Benefit not only made my pores disappear, but it is great for dry skin. Such a great product!!

I don't like Smashbox Photo Finish or Clains Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch. Both looked good right after application, but after a couple of hours, they made my face look even more oily than it does without primer. I do like MAC Prep + Prime SPF 50 though.

I find that Mary Kay has the best primer I have ever used! It goes on extremely smooth with excellent coverage; then adding their new Luminuous line of foundation you end up with a flawless, natural look. And another plus to Mary Kay is that it is more reasonable priced than most box stores and/or high end department stores/cosmetic counters.

I've tried some primers and they didn't work. Maybe it's just the foundations I've used, since I've only used drugstore foundation. I've even tried the Smashbox ones from the slideshow and they didn't work. I think I'll try the MUFE and Tartes ones with a high-end foundation.

I find that primer gives me lots of milia or white bumps on my face. When I don't use it, I don't have the bumps. Anyone else with this same problem and maybe a product that is a fix?

Primer is so touchy for really dry skin, so I'm pleased that skin type was mentioned. I used Mac's and it made my foundation flake faster. Mac products seem heavily calibrated to oily skin. It took me years to figure that out.
