Run (don't walk) to your nearest Macy's -- they're giving away FREE beauty products!
- Posted by Kristen on 01/22/2009 at 4:01pm

Because we're all FREE obsessed (especially in this crappy economy) -- we had to share: For the next six days only, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales are giving away beauty products because of a lawsuit settlement. (This is for real!) While supplies last, you can get free stuff from Dior, Chanel, Estee Lauder (you can read reviews of their products here), Clinique (see this list of their best and worst goodies) and Lancome (yes, they are giving away mascara -- see every beauty editor's fave here).
Did anyone score the freebies yet?
Avoid crowds and still save a buck with these cheapie products

To Rabbit391:
I'm glad that you are passionate about the products that you sell; however please note that you obviously have a biased opinion. There are a tremendous amount of fantastic products on the market, which are sold by various companies. Obviously you didn't purchase any of the brands that were involved in the suit, so I'm a bit puzzled as to why you are commenting on any of this anyway.
Regarding the news article:
As for me, they were out by the time that I got there. I was disappointed that I wasn't compensated when I was part of the class action suit. I also was upset that I received a "chain style" email that was telling women that they could go REGARDLESS of whether they had ever purchased or not. With no way to track this, other than the signed registry, the companies did nothing to ensure that the people from the lawsuit actually got what they WON in the suit. Sad...

got it too!

I went and I got it... fantastic. lines weren't bad at all, just a few minutes, at some stores not even a line to form like at saks fift, it was a walk in...

If you don't go,you missed it

It is the truth...I didn't believe it at first so I called my local Macy's
they told me it will be until the 26th,since I live in a small town I was able to go in,choose what I wanted and get out in less than 5 minutes.

A settlement is not a giveaway
- posted by seb33sf on 01/22/2009 at 7:12pm
I hadn’t heard of this settlement until today, and therefore was not registered with the class. However, I had purchased Estee Lauder regularly at department stores, so I called my local Macy's today. The recording stated simply that the event was over.
Judging by the comments here, you either got to the store before lunch, or you were out of luck. However, I fail to see why a person who registered as part of the settlement class should be denied compensation because Macy's decided to give their award to someone else. Clearly the stores should have mailed redeemable certificates, as another poster suggested.
I hope that the editors will run a follow up piece encouraging their readers in the settlement class to write to the stores and the regulatory agencies and demand their awards. Contrary to the article, this settlement was intended to provide legal compensation provided to those wronged by an illegal business practice, not give free stuff to anyone who bothered to ask. I think some follow through is in order.

Don't care if they're free
- posted by rabbit391 on 01/22/2009 at 12:56pm
I sell Avon and only use Avon products, whether its skincare or color cosmetics. Our products are far superior to those pricey products. Even if they are free, I don't want them!!

I have one more comment
- posted by Jennseay on 01/22/2009 at 12:23pm
The first shall be last, and the last shall be first. You all should be ashamed of yourselves, I mean how stupid, I can't believe what some of you are saying. Those products that you all rushed to get will be gone before you know it, and then what? You gonna buy more? Doubt it! By the way on the news they said they had the stuff at Target too, but don't know why. I am sure some of you do, considering it would be the end of your existence if you couldn't tell someone all the "free stuff" you got, and on top of it, weren't even entitled to it. Truth hurts.

Still product left
- posted by Amielinda on 01/22/2009 at 11:53am
I went to my local Macy's store this morning and there were still two products to choose from so I chose the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair. There were only two people in line ahead of me so I only waited a minute or two so it was well worth it. They had maybe 25-30 of each product left. The other was Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief. I don't think the product will last thru the weekend so I'm glad I went early today.

What the lawsuit is really about
- posted by Meilily on 01/22/2009 at 11:09am
For those of you who may not have actually heard what the cosmetics lawsuit is actually about, this post offers an explanation:
meilily.com/2009/01/beauty-and-the-law-class-action-cosmetic-cases-settlement-consumers-get-one-free-product/
Essentially, the suit claimed that the department stores and cosmetics companies agreed to not let cosmetics go on sale...
Sorry to hear that some of you did not get any product, as it sounds like people who were not actually members of the settlement class got free stuff. It's sad to hear about those rushing to multiple stores (due to either misinformation or perhaps something else entirely) - The settlement terms state that there is to be one product per settlement class member.

Free stuff
- posted by Melpc1 on 01/22/2009 at 10:17am
I didn't go. I sell Avon, so I don't use any of these products. Even if I did use them, the crowd wouldn't be worth the hassle. I'm happy for any of those who got some good stuff though.

what a joke!
- posted by Kathrina on 01/22/2009 at 9:39am
I went to the Breal mall, Macy's and Nordstroms there on Tuesday because I had business there. The wait at both stores was about 2 hours! The people were snaking around coming from everywhere, not worth the wait. On Wednesday I had to go again hoping it would be less, but boy was I mistaken. I heard from my neighbor that her friend went in line 8 times and got "her" stuff, how totally inconsiderate! They should have figured out a different way of dispensing the freebees.

Not only Macy's
- posted by thedragonslady on 01/22/2009 at 8:18am
Nordstroms had it, Niemans had it. I was signed up as part of the court case years ago and got a postcard about it awhile back. Been so busy forgot all about it :(

Bumbed out!
- posted by Ladynxlevel on 01/22/2009 at 7:37am
I went to my nearest macy's yesterday afternoon (rite after work), thinking that they would still have some products because they kept saying it would last 6 days! Little to my surprise everything was GONE! I went back home bumbed out. It would have been a better way of going if they had asked people for receipts....the products would have actually lasted another day.

Not a fair way to go
- posted by _ on 01/22/2009 at 6:44am
I think they should have allowed those in the claim to get something free first. Simply by bringing in something they could send us via email. To top it off they did not even have system to ensure people did not get greedy. This was simply a way for them to get past this long drug out settlement.

Sad, Sad, Sad
- posted by advicesisterA on 01/22/2009 at 6:17am
It is just too sad to read these comments. Some of you apparently took true advantage of the offer for freebies, while others made the trek for nothing thanks to the first group of you! I was always taught that when you are offered a treat from a box of chocolates you take only ONE, leaving the rest for others to enjoy.
This reminds me of the pre-holiday rush that trampled a man to death at a discount store...have we all become so greedy that we are willing to literally or figuratively stamp on our fellow man (or woman) to get what we want?
Sad, Sad, Sad

Greediness
- posted by Festie on 01/22/2009 at 5:42am
I read with interest about the people that went all over to get 5 or more products. What greed! It's because of people like you that people like me were left with little or nothing to choose from when we got off work in the afternoon. Shame on you!

I got some free loot at Norstroms and Macy's in Burlington MA on Tues. I went back to Nordstroms last night and the freebee's were all gone, but Macy's had very little left.

Wish they would had done it differently
- posted by babycull on 01/22/2009 at 12:20am
Yes, I too feel it wasn't really a fair way to distribute the products. If they would have made you bring receipts, I would have fared much better. Not really fair that people who never ever spend a dime at the Department Store Cosmetic Counters get to reap the benefit of this lawsuit. Oh, well...

After I read here, I went to Macy's and they still had 3 products: the clinique one (moisture surge), estee lauder's advanced night repair and one from clarins. No line, no wait.
I wonder if somebody really went to Sak's because I want to try over there tomorrow in the morning.

oh please

To the woman who claims she is ENTITLED to a free product, give me a break. You know what, we are ALL ENTITLED to things in life, but it doesn`t always happen. If you are such a faithful customer to certain cosmetic counters, they will always reward good customers with little extras. I should know, I work at one. Oh, and for all of the products I`ve purchased over the years, employees weren`t allowed to partake. boo hoo.

I waited in line for maybe 15 mins at the Macy's in Valencia tonight and they still had about 6 products to choose from. I am a clinique girl so I took a jar of the moisture surge :)

If you want freebies and you ACTUALLY buy high-end makeup.
- posted by BeautyBar on 01/21/2009 at 8:30pm
For those who are product junkies and spend money every year on high-end makeup just go to your nearest Sephora store and sign up for their Beauty Insider card (for every $100 you spend you get a free gift plus you get a set of lipglosses or a shower gel for your birthday) . You'll get free stuff all the time, plus discount coupons at holiday time, and invites to their special events (where you'll get more free stuff). You won't have to wait for a class-action lawsuit for freebies. For those who complain because they didn't get to the mall in time for the freebies at the department store all I have to say is that you should know better...the early bird gets the worm...and people are vultures when it comes to free stuff. Over the holidays a man was trampled to death by a rush of people trying to get into a store (I forgot which one) because they wanted to get to the Black Friday sales. This is the culture we live in unfortunately. If you didn't get your free item, guess what? You can live without it! It's just cosmetics....

Sheer stupidity - there's nothing left!!!
- posted by SonyaAdams on 01/21/2009 at 8:05pm
6 days my butt! My husband and I went last night (the first night) to go ATTEMPT to pick out something after I got off work. After the (literal) THOUSANDS of dollars I've spent on high end makeup and the dozens of fragrances my husband has purchased in the past few years, we figured that we were more than entitled to this.
Sadly, there were THREE items left (with a dozen people in line in front of us) of all of the supposed thousands of products that they supposedly gave to each store in larger areas and they were all shower gels. What a waste. What kind of a joke did they pull with this "settlement"? I signed up for the settlement LONG ago and it should have only been open to the people signed up for it, NOT the general public looking for freebies that have probably never purchased a single high end cosmetic item.
In a town of more than 200,000 people, there should have been more available if they were making it available to everyone. They're certainly getting a letter about this. I'm sure it won't matter, but if everyone that got screwed by this actually said something, they might do something about it (yeah, right).
