Over the weekend I attempted a DIY deep red manicure (Sadly, I do not recommend trying this at home). Despite spending an hour in the hunched-over position, meticulously applying polish, it took me three or more swipes to cover each nail, which left my manicure a thick and goopy mess. Which brings me to my next gripe: how tough it is to remove dark red polish. It's like trying to conceal blood at a crime scene (or so I assume from watching Dexter). Fast forward to today, when I find out that high-end designer Giorgio Armani is jumping on the beauty line bandwagon with a nail polish collection that makes a lot of promises -- namely that the custom-made brush (designed in the oh-so-chic Armani laboratories) can coat an entire nail in just one stroke. read more
I have a few skills I'm not afraid to brag about. I can wake up at the crack of dawn after a late night/early morning of bar hopping downtown (grimace-free, in heels, and sharp as a tack). I can apply false eyelashes in a moving vehicle ... bus or cab, on myself or on someone else. I can be as proud of these so-called talents as I want, but when it comes to things like a handwritten thank-you note, applying red lipstick, or (getting to the point now) an at-home mani/pedi, I'm woefully inadequate. I'm talking kindergartener-meets-finger-painting-class. read more
Manicures are therapeutic. As a reformed nail-biter, seeing my fingernails transformed from uneven and chipped to smooth, glossy ovals with each stroke of polish takes me to my happy place. But nothing rips me away from my Zen manicure quicker than the nostril-scorching scent of most nail polish removers. read more

Like a killer scarf or one-of-a-kind necklace, your nail color can be a key accessory. Whether you get your nails done at a beauty salon or DIY them at home, the key to the ideal mani/pedi is polish, polish, polish. And there's really nothing like the feeling of freshly-lacquered nails (that is, unless you fish through your purse too soon and ding one of them; don't you just hate that?). See polishes
Nail art and the National Football League are not two things we would not instinctively put together -- like, say, chocolate and peanut butter -- but the NFL and Covergirl are banking on beauty-obsessed football fans making the fanicure happen. Yes, fanicure. read more
When Vogue's Anna Wintour made her Instagram debut last month by posting a photo of herself -- and her very bare, very short nails -- hoisting her hefty September issue, she effectively dealt nail art the death knell. read more
We are suckers for a great pop-up concept. These temporary shops open for a few weeks, days or hours and vanish as quickly as they appeared. Jewelry bar? Sign us up. Meatball joint in your favorite dive bar? Yes, please. read more
Summer is the perfect time to try all the trends you've been too much of a scaredy cat to try the rest of the year. From May to August, there's pretty much zero excuse for being boring and sticking with your same old beauty routine. And the easiest place to start when it comes to injecting some color and pattern into your style? Your nails. read more
I've never been one for nail art. I see my nails as an opportunity to complete my outfit, not compete with it. I'll admit, my typical navy or coral nail polish could use an upgrade, but I don't want to look like I'm back in junior high trying to combat my oppressive school uniform with outlandish nails. I knew there had to be a sophisticated middle ground, so I picked up Deborah Lippmann's new Punk Rock Collection, a trio of polishes named for punk anthems (think: the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated"). read more
If you ever thought your nails were unimportant or if you've been neglecting your hands, now is the time to make them a priority. Just like your skin, they can dry out, peel, break, and become infected. Manicures and pedicures are cosmetic procedures that can help you keep your hands and feet healthy by grooming, trimming, buffing, and painting your nails, as well as managing calluses.
Taking Care of Your Nails
Make an effort to take good care of your nails, and you will be thrilled by the way they complement your own personal style. One easy way to keep them healthy is to drink lots of water. By keeping your body hydrated every day, you'll keep them hydrated, as well. Also, touch up your manicure on a daily basis to prevent chips and cracks and avoid using your nails as tools. This means no using them to pry things open, scrape things off, etc.
Other natural ways to keep your nails healthy include drinking fresh carrot juice daily, making sure that you keep them clean and moisturized, and making sure that your nail salon has hygienic practices.
