  • I never noticed how offensive products could smell until the day my boyfriend turned to me and said, "Ugh! What do you keep putting on your face? It smells like my grandma!"

  • The culprit: Pond's Cold Cream.

  • Of course I recoiled in shock and said, "Hey, suck it up; it's the price of beauty." But on second thought, I was going to be around this person a lot, so I started looking for a non-offensive night moisturizer for dry skin. (This was a challenge as hidden fragrances and essential oils abounded in the skincare category.)

  • Every few weeks, I brought home a different cream and judged it on how well it worked vs. how long it took for him to say, "Ugh!" (In some cases, such as Aquafina Advanced Hydration Rx Overnight Recovery Retinyl Complex Moisturizer, I said, "ugh," first.)

  • Several good night creams, lotions, balms and oils later (by Olay, Chanel, Skyn Iceland, H20+, Darphin, John Masters Organics and Care by Stella McCartney), I settled on Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer (sans SPF) and Abyssine Cream+ (for drier days). The latter smelled faintly like dough but didn't badly offend. Now my dry skin and my boyfriend are both a lot happier, but I occasionally miss that feminine je ne sais quoi of scented night cream.

  • Does anyone else know of a better compromise? What other products smell so bad you can't wear them? Also, what's more important, pleasing your man or loving your product?

    • One of the worst smelling is ojon. It is so strong nobody likes the way it smells. Can't rebuy that one.

    • Two of the biggest offenders: Bourjois blush and Vasanti Tinted Lip Balms. The Bourjois blush smells like an old woman\'s powder - sickly sweet, flowery and gross and the Vasanti Lip Balm has this awful artificial \"fruit\" smell that reeks of plastic. Ugh!

    • ... though I think it is VERY important to be happy with your skin product. You know best what your skin needs and, although there is a vast of products out there, sometimes \"our guys\" just need to deal with the \"side effects\". I always say: \"you\'d be the first to complain if my skin would look dry, grey, and simply old if I wouldn\'t take care of it they way I think is best.\" My skin is on the dry side too and I use real Aloe Vera (Lily of the Desert Inner Leaf Gel) under a light Moisturizer (i.e. Neutrogena or Oil of Olay). Both products have only a very light fragrance and are quite inexpensive. This is a great \"compromise\" for me and nobody complained so far ... not even my skin! :)
