About 45 years ago, a boy named Farouk Shami came to America with $71 in his pocket and a school scholarship. While studying, he began working as a part-time hairdresser -- and found his true calling. Shortly after that, Shami opened his own salon. In 1986 he went from entrepreneur to inventor, creating the first ammonia-free hair lightener and coloring system. The inventions continued to pour out of Shami as he created the high-performing CHI line of hair tools. In 2009, he opened a CHI USA plant in Houston, moving all of his manufacturing to Texas. He then partnered with local factories to create jobs all over the lone star state. For bringing jobs back to America, he was awarded the Apollo Green Award.
