Want to know the real reason for your bad hair days? It's probably because you followed some of this really bad advice

Break This Rule: Highlights are your best bet for natural-looking dimension "Highlights are the ugliest form of color, they're so overused," Sorbie says. "Visualize it: A center part with stripes on each side symmetrically? It looks like a zebra." And while zebras are cute, they're not exactly what comes to mind when you think great hair. Sorbie says you're better off taking inspiration from people with naturally sun-kissed hair, like a kid who's spent all summer on the beach. "They'd have lighter ends and darker roots, that's more natural," Sorbie says. She suggests aiming for a seamless transition from darker roots to lighter ends, and skip the streaky highlights. "Not even zebras have such defined stripes," Sorbie says.
yes, a good haircut can last 3 months, but if you have really long hair, the ends still start looking and feeling a bit dry even if you moisturize diligently. I find it best to trim more often- hair gets much healthier really soon then.
While I still think is it better to just not color my hair at all, at least when I get bored with it and decide to switch it up I won't feel so guilty. Thanks to Wen, I don't have super dry and brittle hair anymore so many of the other items are no longer a problem either!
I am gong to trying the leaving conditioner in and blow drying it, I've never heard of doing that! I try to do a deep conditioning treatment every once in a while! My hair is oily all by itself, I definetely wont be brushing it a bunch like Marsha!!!
I don't know..all dye has ruined my hair. don't even blow dry..just wash and condition..(yes, it's dry, and now damaged) but dry and damaged it stays..it is only sort of better now.
Well this is really helpful! Except I don\'t know how they can expect you to put conditioner in your hair and then get out of the shower to blow dry and then get back in the shower... Seems a little silly, unless you have extra time and towels to put on the floor I guess lol
Wow, my mother was wrong about a LOT of things! Luckily, I never listened to much she said. :-) I use conditioner on my whole head, I don't brush my hair a 100 times, I use a brush on wet hair, I have never felt it was dangerous to dye my hair, and i blow dry the top of my hair first. But, I have always believed the myth that your hair gets used to a shampoo and therefore, you need to change the shampoo on a regular basis. That's why I have always kept 3-4 shampoos in my shower. I don't have to do that anymore!! Think of all the room I'll have in the shower now... However, I do disagree with one thing this article says...its good to wash your hair everyday. Whoever wrote this must not have ethnic hair nor know anyone with ethnic hair. Washing our hair everyday equals disaster. Because it takes so many chemicals and heat products to fix our hair, washing it everyday would/does lead to dryness, brittleness, fizziness, and damage.
A little bit different take on what we are use to. No ruts ladies, lets give the new info a try.....some I have found out on my own but a few are new to me.....glad to have the info. Thanks!
Wow, did I need to hear this! Thanks for the conditioner first trick for fine hair, and the clarification on misinformation about changing shampoos for better results.
Thanks for the great tips! Some of these I hadn't heard before but they made sense. It was especially insightful to read that greasy hair is a symptom of a scalp that needs treatment.
it's great to know that bleach isn't always bad...i've wanted to do an ombre look for my hair for a long time, but i've been holding it off because i didn't want to damage my hair!
I totally agree about brushing vs. combing wet hair!! I've tried using a comb recently on my wet hair because I always hear brushing is bad, and it didn't work on my hair. Maybe it's because my hair is very thin....the comb didn't get through my hair and wouldn't untangle it.
i did follow the rules on 3-4. I did start to condition before I shampoo and I noticed a difference!! But I don't think I will change how I comb my hair. if I comb from the top down on my fine, medium thick hair I will have more tangle rather than less!!! Most of these about breaking rules only apply if you are using non-sulfate products of products specifically for your hair thickness!
This is good! A nice reminder that there are no (or few) hard and fast rules that apply to everyone--we should take advice, but then consider our own hair styles and types! (Including that "a cut should last three months" thing--I wear my hair in a super short pixie and I need it trimmed every four WEEKS to keep my sanity)
i think most of these rules to be broken are accurate.. thanks for reminding everyone how nice and gentle the hair colorants of now are in comparison to the past :)
Loved this article. I have always thought that highlights were a 90's trend. Definitely good, quality information in this article and great myth-busting on how often to wash hair and even how to use conditioner properly.
some interesting tips here! I have extra oily hair so would never condition the roots as a rule..might try a light conditioning every 3rd or 4th wash so!
I heard instead of using poo just condition to wash hair. Sally's has a conditioner that cleanses and leaves hair really soft even if color treated....most of this stuff is not new to me. Also I discovered that combing instead of brushing makes you lose less hair-that does work!:) IDK....there's a lot of advice n whatever u try n like is gr8
This article seems more geared toward fine hair. I don't seem to be breaking any of the rules so why do I still have bad hair days. I try to figure out what I am doing differently but I just can't figure it out. I wish this article would have given more advise about thick hair.
