The SAG awards gave us three different takes on the 60s bouffant that we can't wait to try: Abigail Breslin did Bridgette proud in a retro half-updo, "New Girl" actress Hannah Simone highlighted her bangs with an voluminous updo and Julie Bowen paired her bouffant with a flirty ponytail. read more
We're always in awe of celebs who change up their looks for that one big on-screen moment -- Matthew McConaughey in "Dallas Buyers Club", Lupita Nyong'o in "12 Years a Slave", Meryl Streep in almost every role she plays. But when that makeover takes place every week in your living room (we're talking TV), it's hard to picture the celebrity outside the role. Good hair and makeup is truly powerful, people. Just take a look at these television favorites -- you'll have to rewind your DVR for a double take. read more
If you look around my bathroom, you'll see makeup brushes spilling out of every container. Some may say I have a tiny obsession with them. But everywhere I turn, makeup artists are using their hands as painter's palettes -- dabbing, pressing and molding faces into perfection with their digits. As it turns out, your fingers aren't just good to use in a pinch -- some products apply better with your fingers than with brushes. I enlisted Gita Bass, celebrity makeup artist and member of the Simple Advisory Board (she also happens to use her fingers to apply the majority of her makeup), to tell me all about this "finger painting" movement. read more
The matte trend is nothing new in the world of beauty. It started last spring with matte hair (hello, dry shampoo). Then, shine-free manicures kicked glossy gels to the curb this fall. As Spring 2014 approaches, matte lips will be taking center stage. If you're already dreading dry lips and bleeding color , don't worry: the new formulas are surprisingly moisturizing. And if you prep with quick scrub, a dab of balm and a light lining with a nude pencil, you'll have soft lips and and color that stays in place for the long haul. read more
It's a familiar scenario: You start your day with perfectly made-up eyes. Your lashes are long and lifted, your cat-eye wings are as symmetrical as they'll ever be and your shadow is blended so skillfully that you wish you could give yourself a high five. But a few hours later, you glance in the bathroom mirror to find a pair of shockingly faded, creased eyelids. What was a makeup masterpiece this morning is now a hot mess. We've all been there. My biggest problem with New Year's resolutions isn't that you're setting yourself up for failure (even though that's generally the case), it's that executing them can be so expensive. Want to hit the gym? Get ready to shell out hundreds of dollars for a membership. Need a hair transformation? Expect a $200+ salon bill. See ideas
You can't get the lashes you want without the right tool. But with all the wand shapes to choose from, picking out the perfect mascara can feel a bit like 9th grade geometry class (and nobody wants to relive high school, especially when it comes to something that's supposed to be fun like makeup). So how exactly does one go about deciphering all of the hourglass, spherical and wavy shapes to find the right mascara for your lash? We're here to break it down for you -- with a little help from the experts, of course. read more
I'm in major lust -- lust for Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins and Brooke Shields' eyebrows (circa 1983). Fierce, bold brows that look like they've never been touched with a pair of tweezers have been haunting me everywhere lately. Runways, red carpets and magazine spreads alike all feature full-browed beauties front and center, making every waxed and plucked woman (myself included) wishing we had saved our money and embraced our natural side. read more
Everybody's doing it.
No, not shopping (though we're also engaging in an obscene amount of that recently). We're talking about filling up your Pinterest boards with holiday hair and makeup looks. Even if you're not a heavy pinner, you've probably been trying to figure out festive outfits and the holiday hairstyles that'll complement them perfectly. At least that's what we've been doing.
