  • A Clear View on Contact Lenses

  • Hi. My name is Charli and I'm a severely nearsighted contact lens user who has repeatedly ignored my doctor's advice to wear glasses more often and "give my eyes a rest." Instead, I sleep in my lenses (occasionally) while I save up for the unlikely event of laser surgery. The downside of this -- and staring at a computer screen all day -- is frequent eye strain and dryness. (I have at least three bottles of drops in my purse.) Am I tempting a fate of blindness? Yes. Yes I am. I'm also doomed to battle running eyeliner for as long as I keep this up.

  • Anyone out there with me on this?

  • Enter Acuvue's offer to put me out of my misery with their 1-Day Acuvue Moist lenses, which claim to lock in moisture all day with LACREON™ Technology.

  • My initial response? "Yeah. Right." But after trading in my usual FreshLook disposables for two months, I must say I noticed a difference with Acuvue. While eye strain was still present (that will require discipline), dryness and discomfort subsided for most of the day. (Yay!) The lenses still didn't pass my ultimate test -- making it through a midnight movie without eye drops -- but they were a significant improvement. See my review here. Those of you who want to give them a shot, I highly recommend trying a free sample and entering our contest to win a year supply here. Here are a few things to note that I couldn't fit into the review:

  • 1. Eco-friendly types may disapprove of the act of throwing out pods and lenses daily ... which I rationalized by noting the small pod size and lack of need for cleaning solution or lens case.

  • 2. Those with especially dry eyes may want to try Acuvue Oasys Contact Lenses with Hydraclear Plus instead. (Late-night movie test results pending.)

  • 3. While the pods that these lenses come in are easy to separate and travel with, the foil top can be stubborn. I recommend using scissors to cut off each lens pod instead of tearing to avoid opening a pod by accident.

  • 4. Warning: Do not leave the house with these on backwards; they're so moist, they slide around constantly and blur your vision. I figured this out after stumbling into a display at the grocery store.

  • Any other contacts you'd recommend? I'm open to suggestions!

    • I know you have probably heard this already, but BE CAREFUL about wearing your lenses to bed!! I used to do that on occasion too, until one morning I woke up and had to go to the emergency room because my cornea had developed an ulcer. Painful!!! I was told it was from wearing my contacts too long/much. Just a warning!! Also: I can vouch for the Acuvue Oasys lenses. I have been using them for almost 2 years now and love them!
