If you're not thoughtful about the way you move, your "om" could turn into a serious "ouch." Here are 7 simple yoga exercises that can cause back pain -- and how to stay safe
Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana) A move so easy your grandmother could do it -- right? That may be the case, but even something this simple can put unnecessary pressure on your back. "Many people maintain straight legs when they do this pose, which locks your pelvis and makes it harder to rotate forward," says Rothenberg. "That means that all of the force of your flexing movement comes into your low back, compressing the area as you bend."
To correct this, lightly bend your knees and focus on rotating your body forward from your pelvis. Keep the stretch feeling balanced through your hip, hamstring, and lower back. "This releases the intense strain on your back and allows for a more even and safe extension of your body," she says. Be sure that you keep the natural curve of the spine as well. If you're completely rounded, it's a sign that your core hasn't joined the party.
As a 15 yr gymnast and black let in martial arts people think I am unaffected by yoga. I am very hyperexstensive and blew out my back afew years ago, which makes yoga much harder for me than the average person. Most of these moves are accurate and actually make my back pain worse than any gymnastic moves I still do. I now avoid yoga since it only forced me to relax my mind these days. Great article.
I always thought those yoga moves were meant to stretch your back. I believe that if you are doing them correctly its okay to do it. I have a bad back and these yoga moves helps it feel a lot better.
Good tips... although any activity, even sitting, can be bad for your back! If you want to do the more difficult poses, it's a good idea to have a yoga instructor examine your form closely. I just recently have been able to do bridge!
Excellent Article ... being treated by a chiropractor and he (plus my GP) state that Yoga can sometimes make certain back conditions worse! I actually found this out with 2 of these poses. Ouch !!!
I agree with this. I've done yoga before, I'm not pro but every position listed has not felt good on my back. I honestly thought it was supposed to feel that way.
Your poses are listed incorrectly. Warrior I shown here is actually Warrior II. Cobra is a picture of Upward Facing Dog. First, get the information correct! Also, if you do these poses slowly and with modifications for a sore back, or if you're a beginner, they will actually strengthen and eradicate back pain.
The title sounds so intimidating! I love yoga, and it definitely can do a lot of good for overall well-being, and can make one's back feel better. It's just important to listen to your body, and not to strain yourself to do an asana "NOW". Take your time, and enjoy every posture! :)
Very helpful tips. Good things to keep in mind while practicing yoga and doing anything that might put your back in jeopardy (lifting, stretching, etc).
