Dermatologist Heidi Waldorf explains how to treat discoloration, breakouts and your last (hopefully!) sunburn of the summer
Skin Complaint: Pigmentation (including melasma, freckles, age spots)
The Fix: "Although there are over-the-counter products that can be used, the most effective are prescription agents," Waldorf says. "I prescribe topical retinoids and hydroquinone," she adds. She likes Triluma, which contains tretinoin (a retinoid), hydroquinone and corticosteroid, and will lighten dark spots while chemically exfoliating skin. If heading to your derm for a prescription isn't an option, try this reader-approved hydroquinone-infused cream instead: Obagi Nu-Derm Blender, $79.99. And to hide discoloration while it fades, try Clinique's Even Better Makeup SPF 15, $24.50, it's a skin corrector (it employs Vitamin C, E, mushroom yeast extract, grapefruit peel and white birch to even out skin tones), protector and foundation in one.SEE NEXT PAGE: Skin Complaint: Breakouts
