The Facts About Keratin Hair Treatments

I was COMPLETELY loving this until I read the part about some products containing Formaldehyde. Reading some of the positive comments below is putting an idea in my head of trying this! Thanks!

Comments: Great and useful product information. I have exceptionally curly, damaged and have dandruff hair. To remove that problem I had tried dove dandruff care shampoo and find some good result. But now I have decided to use keratin hair treatments.

I recently had my first keratin treatment done and was informed that I would need to purchase a shampoo and conditioner that is both sulphate free and if possible sodium chloride free. My hairstylist watered the explanation down by telling me these ingredients found in every shampoo and conditioner unless otherwise specified would strip all the precious treatment I just paid for out of my hair. I went to online and did alot of research and spoke to my hairstylist (5th ave salon). I went with the Shielo Hydrate Shampoo and the Shielo Hydrate Conditioner and am pleasantly surprised. Not only is it keeping as much of the treatment in as possible, but it leaves my long, thick, newly straight hair SO SOFT! Especially in combination with the conditioner. It has a subtle, clean smell and feels slightly thick when applying. The $20 price tag is a little harsh in comparison to say a drugstore shampoo, but it definitely shows a difference than those products.

I highly recommend Brazilian Silk. First of all this company has ALWAYS been up front with it's ingredient. And YES it does contain a very small amount of formaldehyde. However, the amount is way below the safety standards set by OSHA. As long as you use a fan and have a window cracked you are fine. The results from Brazilian Silk are like no other. You hair literally feels like silk. The only reason you should be wary of using this product is if your hair is extremely damaged. There is nothing in this product that will damage your hair BUT your hair needs to be able to withstand a flat iron at a high heat. The other great thing about BS is that you can control the amount of volume you leave in the hair and the amount of curl you leave in the hair. If you want to leave your curls and just smooth your frizz then you flat iron base to ends. If you want to elimate as much curl as possible you use a "stepping" motion when flat ironing. Do NOT get this product mixed up with Brazialian Bloxout. Brazilian Blowout has something like 3+ times the amount of formaldehyde that OSHA considers safe. OSHA considers anything 2 ppm and below safe to use. Brazialian Silk contains .42 ppm.

I have extremly curly hair, and i just did the Keratin today, i didnt find the smell strong what so ever, and i always have my hair up ], i think the Keratin i just did will help finally leave my hair loose. im still getting use to the long straight hair now. I hope it works and i have really thin hair, and alot of hair as well. The process took a good amount of timee and i have great results!!! :D

I'm looking forward to trying out one called Cocoa Keratin Smoothing treatment. From what I've read it has no silicone, sulfates or parabens and it's much gentler on all hair types, plus it comes with its own pre and post treatment shampoos and conditioner.

Please listen to me...do not do this to your hair. I did it twice and loved my long straight thick hair. But a month after the second treatment I got a bad sore throat and bloody nose. I made an appointment with my doctor and was crying cause my throat was burning so bad. She tested me for strep which I did not have so she couldn't give me anything to treat my sore throat. 3 days later I went to urgent care. I was given a numbing medicine cause my throat hurt so bad I could not swallow and I still had blood coming from my nose. They gave me cough syrup with codeine, the codeine would help with the pain. The sore throat lasted for 7 weeks. I still have the after effects of that sore throat. And to top it all off my hair fell out by the hand fulls. How heart breaking to lose my hair like that. It has finally stopped falling out, but i now have thin hair and it took weeks of looking for all kinds of vitamins and trips to the herb shop and experiments with herbs to find out what would work best to help me keep what hair I had left. I finally have healthy looking hair again and as much as i loved the way my hair looked after the blow out, I would never ever in this world have that treatment done again EVER!!. I got a ton of compliments on how beautiful my hair looked, but still...NO! I have lost a lot of weight from the stress and from worrying about throat cancer. Please it is not worth the worry or stress. I would give anything if I had never ever done this.

I use Sunliss Hair treatments. I have used it once now and loved it and iit actually smelled good! Thu have a few different types for different hair types but I used the \"ultra\". I'm particularly fond of Cocoa Keratin System, it's a Brazilian keratin treatment that comes with the pre-treatment shampoo, smoothing treatment and daily shampoo and conditioner. I like it because the treatment lasts up to 5 months and its very safe on my hair, giving it nutrients, moisture and smoothing it down. The protein and argan oil help immensely and strengthen my hair while making ir super shiny. I recommend it :)

I've had the japanese straightening done and it's as permanent as a hair dye. When your hair grows out the frizz grows out just like your dark roots showing...I stick to professional products to get my hair straight. Good info here.

The Coppola and Keratin Complex has tested positive for formaldehyde by various independent labs. They claim to be Timonacid Acid, however, several lab testing facilities has reported very high amounts of formaldehyde. Basically they are lying about what is actually in the product. They are mislabeling a known carcinogen. There are several lawsuits from people who got concer due to these high levels of formaldehyde. BEWARE!!!

I've been following tons of these blogs. I have super thick, course hair that I wish was simply curly. It's so unevenly so---from kinky here to frizzy there to decently just curly elsewhere. I am thrilled with the Prevana Keratin Fusion texture control, which gets the stamp of safety level approval from OSHA, the study that generated this whole ruckus. I'll paste in the relevant results here. On my hair, it works beautifully. Not stick straight, just relaxed enough that I can wash and wear with touchup straightening of my bangs and a little shaping of the edges. A dream come true to me. Lasts until it grows out. Hair feels great. But it's hard to find a salon that does it since they are low in the radar field because they don't do lots of advertising and self promotion. My stylist's partner has similar hair and was won over when she was the guinea pig in the salon. My stylist says she has just a few clients like me for this particular treatment. Prevana also has a milder one for less extreme hair. Why don't more people do this? It's deemed safe! As the OSHA study reveals, there are color and other treatments at the same (low) level. For the OSHA results, go to OSHA or google it for results to hair smoothing products study. On pg. 21 they give the results by brand. Note that they go on to say the last 3, which includes the Prevana, are well within the zone. They continue below that to show the studies of color, even shampoos and other products. You'll see the results.

I love the way my hair looks & feels after having a keratin hair smoothing treatment however I almost gave up on them. During the flat ironing and blow drying phase my eyes were very irritated and I had a hard time handling the odor. I spoke to my stylist about this and she told me her other clients had complained as well. She was considering stopping this service as she too had eye irritation and frequent headaches. Thankfully she did a little research and purchased a portable salon ventilation system for her workstation and it made a tremendous difference. She uses the same two keratin treatment brands (Keratin Complex & Brazilian Blowout) but now with this convenient portable salon ventilation there is no smelly odor and my eyes don't burn. I asked her if she still got headaches and she said no. It would have been hard to go back to my frizzy/curly hair after enjoying the way my hair looks after one of these treatments. Also, the biggest bonus is it only takes me 5-10 minutes in the morning to do my hair!

I have heard a lot of horror stories, if your stylist knows what they are doing, you should have great results. I use American Cultures Simply Smooth, and their Pure NV line. I’m comfortable with the amounts of formalin, and aldehyde donors, that they contain. I find that because they have a few different smoothing products, with different smoothing capabilities, I can custom smooth my clients hair. Since I have faith in the company and its products I feel comfortable doing the treatments, even on myself, and in my home. If we all slowed down, and took a little more time investigating what we use, and allow into our salons, we would be safer, healthier and happier.

these days, everything is a carcinogen. if everything that was supposedly a carcinogen, was really a cause of cancer, you'd think they'd be closer to finding a cure. keratin is actually a protein, so the keratin actually strengthens your hair, it does the opposite of thinning it out, unless of course it's applied incorrectly, that might cause hair to fall out. That's why you have to be extra careful when applying it.

Actually there are organic keratin treatments available that do not contain formaldehyde, derivatives or donors. Check out Tela Beauty Organics and La Brasiliana "Excluso." These products do not give you the months of smoothness but they do last several weeks and make the hair shiny, soft and frizz-free. Better than risking our health any more than we already do for hair!

Wow, I would not go near these treatments. Too risky, and you will not know if they're completely safe until years of treatments later. If I had curly hair, I'd learn how to style my hair in a flattering way, so I didn't have to spend a ridiculous amount of time and money on my hair. Every texture of hair can look fabulous!

I thought formaldehyde was not allowed in hair products from long ago. I was going to recommend this to someone, but now will have to read further reports. Hair looking good is nice, but health outweighs it this time.

I am a stylist that uses juvenix keratin treatments. Ours last up to 5 months with the use of sulfate free shampoos and conditioners. Also, the clients of mine that use redken's real control conditioning treatment weekly/ bi weekly seemed to have their smoothing treatments last longest. At Henry Roth Salon and Spa of Houston, Tx our keratin treatment starts at $175. It is not a straightener, keratin treatments are smoothing, taming, and defrizzing treatments that drastically cut down on styling time at home. You run more risk of hair breakage from flat ironing ur hair daily with not having this treatment done. The keratin treatments actually strengthen and replenish your hair, and once you've had one done u use less heat to style your hair. In other words as a professional, I believe the keratin treatments are better for your hair vs using flat irons daily to straighten. I see more breakage in the salon on clients from frequent use of flat irons than anything else. My mom got this done to her hair about 2 yrs ago and, like me, she has super thick & curly hair. After the first treatment, I was SHOCKED!! She came home with stick straight, frizz-free, soft & shiny hair!!!! I was, for the first time, envious of her hair!!! I've been reading more and more about this treatment and think I am going to try it. I completely agree with LaFemmeNikita about making sure you speak with and have the treatment done by a TRAINED PROFESSIONAL!! Never attempt at-home treatments like this because it's a guarantee you will NOT get the same results and you can severely damage your hair or worse, lose it!! Think before you do ladies!! Some things were meant to be done by professionals. And if the cost is what's holding you back, think of the long-term payoff you get in return. Most of them lasted at least 3 months and all of them improved the overall health and quality of your hair, especially over time.

I'm so on the fence about this. On one hand, I can get my hair as straight as I want with my FHI flat iron, but on the other, it sure would be nice to save all that time-- but I don't know if I can deal with the possibility of my hair breaking off. Thank you for this wonderful guide

I am African American. I had this treatment done in May 2010. I had not had a perm or any chemicals in my hair for over 10 years. My hair did not break off or fall out. I had mine done at an ULTA store by an African American hair stylist. My only issue is that there was an odor, my eyes did burn for a bit. It lasted for 4months. Eventually the smell goes away, but it last in my hair for several washes. Towards the end I really liked it because it wasn't as straight, but REALLY easy to do on my own. I haven't set foot in the hair salon since may and it's now December. I'm consdering the express treatment for half the cost. I don't like the smell of my hair, but I did look fabulous. I recommend it if you interview stylists who have been trained. I do not recommend getting a box and doing it yourself. My curly hair is back and it washed out completely. My hair has grown and it hasn't fallen out. My hair is thick and at my shoulders when blow dried. I decided to comment after reading the african american hair stylist's comment. I don't think the peopel are getting professional treatments and generally untrained individuals cannot assess the health of their own hair. This treatment, by a trained professional was worth it because I didn't have to keep going to the salon every 2-4 weeks. I easily did my hair myself. I used my Miss Jessies shampoo and conditioner I regularly use on my hair since they don't contain sulfur. That was the only requirement that my stylist told me. It just makes the treatment last longer. My hair is back to normal. I have my coiled ringlets yadda yadda and I'm not bald. I read the oprah thread. Have a trained indvidual assess your hair condition. Have a physician assess your health. There are underlying health conditions that can also cause your hair to fall out. Do your research and don't do it if you are not comfortable with trying something new. Definitely don't do it if you don't trust your stylist. Oh yeah, PLEASE think twice before buying a kit and ASK for guidance BEFORE you do it yourself. DIY chemical hair treatments rarely are a good idea in my opinion. Yes, I said chemical. Don't let em fool ya. It may have a formaldehyde derivative. Please note that formaldehyde is fairly ubiquitous. I think it's more harmful for the stylist breathing the fumes. So far I'm fine and I'm a hypochondriac with a science background. Do your research and what you feel comfortable with. =)

I took my daughter to get this (age 11) because she had, for lack of a better term, a Jew-fro. It cost me $420 after the tip and special shampoo. It only stayed straight for a day. However, it was much easier to deal with for the next couple months because it was deeply shiny and smooth and healthy afterwards. It was just really wavy instead of tight curls so it took less time to straighten. Still, I wouldn't pay for it again.

I had the global keratin hair treatment done about 1 month ago, by my regular hairstylist and paid about $130. I didn't go to a fancy hairstylist, I just went the hairstylist I've been going to and trust for the past 2 years. I loved this treatment. I'm mixed African American and Caucasian and had frizzy and unmanageable hair that would take about 1 hour to straighten and would instantly frizz when I stepped outside. NOW... my hair is amazing. First week, the hair is super straight and flat. By the second wash, more bounce comes back, but the hair is nice and relaxed and DOES NOT FRIZZ. its AMAZING. i had chemical straightening as a child and had horrible experiences. With this keratin hair treatment i have had NO side effects. The fumes did not bother me. my hair looks so healthy. my hair has never looked like this before. i use to have so many split ends, now you can't even see it. my hair is so shinny too. it now takes me only 10 minutes to straighten my hair, because my hair is already relaxed when i wake. It holds the curl when I curl it, and stays straight when I straighten it. ITS AMAZING. When i go out in cold weather or sweat, my hair does not even react. it stays relaxed and DOES NOT FRIZZ. amazing product.

I have had La Brasiliana keratin treatment twice. My hair loves it because it really helps tame my hair and makes it more easier to work with. Makes it a lot faster to flat iron. Only concerns are that it does tend to make my eyes watery and the smell is terrible. I went through this process twice because it really helps my hair, less frizzy, more soft, less puff. My hair looks like a fro without any product in it. Usually the treatment can last me up to six months or more because it is highly recommended to use a shampoo that is free from Sodium lauryl sulfate so that the results last a lot longer. A lot of people mention that in the keratin treatment has chemicals in it and that it is a hair relaxer. I hate to say it but I do believe it's true. They say it's safe but yet has a harsh smell. Normally hair relaxers smell bad and both my stylist say it doesn't contain formaldehyde and yet no one can explain that smell. I thought about trying coppola keratin treatment later on to see if it has less of the smell and if it works just as good. It's so crazy that the keratin treatment is the only thing that has worked for me. I have tried many different relaxers in my life time and none works like this does and it's also not good for you, having that smell in your face for so many hours breathing it. If I don't get this done on my hair, it's like everyday is a bad hair day for me. I was so disappointed to hear about those whose hair had fallen out. How terrible is that. I hope you ladies take care and sorry to hear about that. I agree with keratin in regards to her comment about making sure you have someone who is licensed to work on your hair with the keratin treatment and inform you accurate information about this treatment. I am an African American hairstylist and have had many people come to me in tears because their hair has fallen out or broken off so bad they had to cut it into a small afro because they got a keratin treatment. My advice about this treatment is you cannot, I mean absolutely no kind of relaxer or perm in your hair. Not even a texturizer. Your hair will come out if you have any of these chemicals in your hair. You have to not perm your hair for at least six months to a year. When the time comes for you to get the keratin treatment, make sure they cut off the permed hair before applying the treatment. If there is any kind of perm left on the ends your hair will BREAK OFF. African American women are mis informed about this treatment and have fallen victim listening to the wrong information. There is nothing wrong with the Keratin for our hair but please let someone licensed and trained to put this in your hair. Remember NO CHEMICAL WHATSOEVER IN YOUR HAIR, YOU CAN HAVE SEMI-PERMANENT COLOR AND THAT IS IT.

Hair breakage from Coppola SOLUTIONS: I had the Coppola treatment done on Feb 4th. My problems started like most people's I have read on this post. I too found this post in a desperate search AFTER my hair was breaking off in little frizzy pieces after the first wash (three day waiting period.) I'm going to make this to the point and share my solutions intead of all the problems. My problems seem right on with everyone else's. I first used OJON PRE-CLEANSE TREATMENT so my hair could receive the full benefits from the OJON RESTORATIVE TREATMENT. I also wanted to use the pre-cleanse as a way to remove ANY formaldahyde residue from my scalp. I left the OJON RESTORATIVE TREATMENT on over night. The next day I rinsed my hair with warm water and shampooed with PUREOLOGY NANOWORKS ZEROSULFATE then conditioned with the PUREOLOGY NANOWORKS LUXURY HAIR MASQUE. I left the masque on for 1 hour. The two days I spent doing the OJON and PUREOLOGY I was researching everywhere on what I could do further. I tried the above because it was what I had on hand. NOTE: My hair was noticeably better after using the above, but the possible saving grace was yet to come. I read several reviews on other sites about NEXXUS ALOXXI POLYMEDIC EMERGENCY RECONSTRUCTOR. I had to order it online. The waiting for 3 days was painful! I did my first ALOXXI treatment tonight. MY hair looks and feels full of life and shiny again. I do have many broken pieces around my face and some on the crown. But, I think I have saved my hair. I think the ALOXXI is the way to go. But, I wanted to at least let everyone know the other options that did help. I am going to continue using my PUREOLOGY shampoo and conditioner as my regular ritual and do another ALOXXI again in one week. I returned all COPOLLA shampoo and conditioner to the salon. I will not support or use their products ever again. I feel 100% certain that the Peter Copolla company will be found responsible for not only damaging people's hair but harming their health. I have extremely curly and a ton of hair. I had the Global keratin treatment done almost 2 months ago and love it. It makes my life so much easier and I do not dread washing and drying my hair. I even went on a Caribbean cruise and my hair was amazing. I would do again and again. My colour stayed great. The treatment smelled like chocolate and only took 1 1/2 hours. I have tried alot of different things and this is by far the best and most gentle

I've done alot of research on this - and then finally had it done in a salon that uses QOD - the top Brazilian one - no "ether" - that's ridiculous - no fumes and the results were crazy-great. QOD has been doing it so long, apparently, that their formula is the most refined and produces the best results. I have several friends who have tried the treatment at different salons that use different products (okay - they're slightly addicted - but they all look like models) - and they're sold on QOD. Even though it's more high-end and therefore expensive...

I tried BTK ..which noticeably helped with frizz..for a few weeks. Don't know if this is because i do root touch ups every 3 weeks and possibly messed it up, or that the treatment itself just doesn't last six mnths like they say. Any ideas?

I am a salon owner and have used Texiera and Coppola. Now I only use QOD GOLD. It is a little hard to find but it is huge in high end salons in Europe and the Middle East (where I am from). QOD GOLD is NOT for someone to do at home, it is the real deal. My clients go nuts when I run out. But, BE CAREFUL, u must get QOD directly from them (qodusa dot com). There are many fake sites here, and my staff has been ripped off, even on Amazon and Ebay. Also the QODUSA site will not accept refunds or help with products that are not bought from the company. Their site in Brazil is in portuguese.

Aldehyde is like formaldehyde. Read this months page 21 of Consumer Reports Shop Smart magazine March, 2010 article Bar Beauty Deal. They suggest to just stick to a straightening iron....I am.

I have this treatment done every 3 months here in Rio and they call it London hair straightening. I don't have gray hair or hair color and it looks wonderful.

I’m assuming you’re mostly talking about women of African descent. We’ve had this identity crisis since the days of slavery. In order create the perfect slaves, slavemasters had to break the minds and spirits of the slaves and one of the tactics was to instill in the African slaves an inferiority complex. Everything White was touted as superior and beautiful, everything Black was debased as inferior and ugly. Black Women are going to have to go toe-to-toe with centuries of brainwashing all over the Western hemisphere before these ridiculous hair straightening and dying practices are shown for just what they are - the product of racist slavemaster indoctrination - then stopped. I’m 62 years old and stopped hair straightening when I was 17 when I came to the full realization of what I was doing to my hair, my self-esteem and my racial pride. It won’t be easy to stop because the brainwashed and racist people around you will try to shout you down, but once you discover that Black is really beautiful, you will not go back! Rest assured everyone is not brainwashed, racist or stupid so make your new friends those that appreciate Blackness and will respect and appreciated yours. Thanks for calling attention to the issue.
