When I was a little girl I wore my hair in a pony tail every single day - it was so long it would give me headaches. When I'd finally had enough of those (and some were just awful!) I decided to get it cut to something that was more fashionable AND shorter, LOTS shorter. Even though it ended up being shoulder lenght I just loved it. But my hair was also very very thick! Mom finally took me to her hairstylist who layered my hair and I just loved it! Yes, it was a bit unnerving taking that LARGE jump, but once I did I said the same thing that another girl wrote, "I'll NEVER let my hair grow long again!!" although I did later down the road. It took some getting used to, but using about 1/2 the product/s from before it was cut, and cutting the drying time from about 45 mins. down to just 15 mins. or so - I LOVED IT!! It was quite a decision for a 4th grader LOL The tips in this article were great! Thanks for sharing them ;)

I agree. Cynthia Nixon's complexion is way to pale for ash blonde. I'm getting very close to 40 and I doubt I will ever cut my hair short. Not in this live time.

There are so many cute styles. I am afraid to cut my hair short for fear that it will "age" me. I am early 40's and really have had short"er" hair for most my life and just started growing it out. It just now is starting to grow below the shoulder and am enjoying it. So I guess for now, I'll leave it and continue to grow a little longer.

I agree with the suggestions in this story, but as for women who aren't certain how to "grow" their style with their spiritual/physical growth rather than assuming that your guidelines apply to every woman. My most challenging style "item" has been my hair. I have very thick, very fine hair that can't be forced to be wavy, curly, feathered, spiral-curled, nor turned into "big hair." It took several years of frustration, having "root perms" and "body perms" (as well as normal perms); buying dozens of mousses, hair sprays and styling gels; spending sleepless nights with plastic rollers (the pins poked my scalp); and burning my fingers with hot rollers and curling irons before I stopped fighting and I finally decided to work with what the good Lord gave me. "My" hair style is a classic side-parted bob (no bangs) cut to about 1" below my earlobes; the ends curve inward pageboy-style. It gets a little bounce and shine from a color glaze of medium warm tones and Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner, My hair is very dry, another reason why I keep it short; I also reduce the amount of blow-drying (plus I don't try dry completely). REQUEST: could you writye an article on getting the appropriate look for eye makeup for us 40+ customers?

Completely disagree on almost every statement. I have long hair. What when we reach 40 we are supposed to shorn our femininity? Hair color, whether ashy blonde or vivid red works well as long as the skin color works with it. An ashy blonde on a young, pale person looks just as bad. What outright arrogance. Wear what looks best on YOU, no matter what age you are.

I'm not quite to my 40s yet but my mom happens to be over 60 with quite long, very light blonde hair and I honestly couldn't picture her any other way. I have witnessed her hair other colors and they didn't flatter her at all! She looks amazing for her age and part of that is her hair. Me, her and my sister look terrible with any hair length above the shoulders, believe me we have tried....I disagree with a lot of these don't hair styles. Nicole Kidman looked absolutely gorgeous for instance. Isn't it important to wear what you love and makes you feel good about yourself?

To be honest, Cynthia Nixon looks WAY better and age appropriate than Kristen Chenoweth. Who said that pale skin looks bad?! And ashy blonde looks great on Cynthia, much more natural than wig-looking platinum blonde on her opponent. That is such a confusing article because some DON'Ts actually look much better than alleged DOs.

My hair is naturally wavy/loose-curly (if that makes sense) - depending on the time I have to scrunch it into being more curly. Luckily, my face is more rounded and my hair is healthy (as stated in one of the slides). I was STILL wondering about my hait till I got to the last slide! I get compliments on it a lot and I DO NOT use OTC coloring anymore, so THAT helps, I think. I also agree with Cateyes1...I have to wear my hair up or in a ponytail for work (I'm in law enforcement). I definitely don't feel like I'm "trying to re-live cheer days". Although, secretly, I don't mind feeling "cute" and can pull that off -- to an extent. I also think a lot of the hair/makeup styles have to do w/what age range you LOOK like. I still look like I'm in my early 30's and I'm turning 42 on the 10th. Anyway, aside from all of my jabbering - the article was pretty good, overall.

Well, this article blows. So many areas where I feel they are dead wrong, from experience. First, I wear ponytails at age 47 and plan to keep wearing them till I die, believe it or not, they DO look good on me and no, I'm NOT trying to recapture my 'cheerleading' days. What a stupid comment! I've also been wearing a loose side braid for several years, it also happens to be very flattering on me. As for color? I've been a bottle blonde for over 20 years, tried to play by the ruls and went back to my former shade. What a huge mistake, it instantly aged me a good 10+ years. I looked terrible, old, and frumpy. I went back to blonde fast and look so much better and younger. And, AND, I keep to the ash tones with my fair skin and green eyes. A warm blonde is NOT a good color for me. One last comment, I will never cut my hair short. Short hair is just not me. Whatever happened to people just doing what is best for them, what looks good on them, instead of having to go by 'the rules' and follow like a bunch of sheep. Individuality!

This article states that blonde women in their 40s and older should do a "warm" blonde hair color, not a cool, ashy blonde. Works great if your COLORING (complexion and eyes) is a "warm" color, but if you are a "cool" color (fair complexion with blue/gray eyes) , you need a "cool" bonde hair color, with "ash" --not "brass"-- tones. Geez, who wrote this article??????

My absolute pet peeve is women who, after they reach their mid-forties or so, chop off their hair. Then they gain weight when they hit menopause, and they end up looking like a man, and/or very "butchie". Where is their femininity? They all seem to look alike, very masculinzed. I am 61, and my hair is natural blonde (not brassy or platinum at all ) and shoulder-length, with layers. I am adamant about getting it cut every 6 to 8 weeks. Fortunately, I was blessed with great genes and neither my parents and none of my grandparents' hair turned grey or white until they were in their 80s and 90s. I also have been blessed with thick hair and I also take care of it. I know some women cut their hair short short because it's thinning or for convenience sake, but please!!!!!!

I just think this is ridiculous. I once recently gave in to the "if you are older you HAVE to have short hair" imperative and was instantly SORRY. I just dont look as good with short hair. Some of the most dynamic, charismatic, influential, and yes, beautiful women I've seen, met, and had the privilege to know throughout my lifetime have also been style rule renegades. At 43 I'm happy to follow a similar "style", with long hair to my hips which I'm complimented on regularly, no makeup, and a wardrobe and style of my own creations - not what marketing swears I'll not be happy without - I'm doing very well thank you. And while I do get plenty of compliments, I guarantee none of my circle would disappear or judge me if I walked in tomorrow dressed in a potato sack and sporting a bald head . Who and what a person is, their worth and value, is not determined by how they choose to wear their hair. Perhaps the writer of the above article might spend some time in the US shelters now housing so very many jobless, or in a clinic in Africa, treating children whose last concern is hair and looks. The individuals volunteering their time for such causes deserve to be written about - but please, don't write about how old or tired they look for their choice of hair style.

This is a bunch of BS! Besides more than half the celebs have hair extensions..And some of us ladies did not get the thick locks hair gene!! In my family history on both sides there is extremely fine hair that thins as you age naturally like everyone does.. We should all age gracefully and no 16 yr old looks good in 45 yr old clothes just like a 45 yr old does not look good is 16yr old clothes..We age and get wrinkles thinning hair and our body changes.. Some of us dont have tons of money to run down and get Botox every time a wrinkle appears.. I am 45 and still look great! Its hard to go thru and I want to be in my mid 20's to low 30's forever as it was the greatest time and women just shine then at that age! But when you hit mid 40s say bye bye to youth and start planning to try to do what you can to look young, pilates yoga eat healthy foods! Drop the burger and fries ladies!! This will help if you eat the right fats and carbs and your greens..I am still 115lbs and have always stayed around 105 to 115 I never want to go past 115 or under, because too skinny with getting older does not look healthy...And go to or lucky vitamins and get a a well balanced vitamin regimen as you lose certain things as we get up in that 40 age group and you can replenish it naturally.. As far as the hair thing to heck what others think.. Mine is very thin and so is my little sisters and mine is a layered shoulder bob where my little sister has one length hair half down her back and its so stringy and thin she scared to cut it.. If you hair is that fine and thin you are going to look older with long stringy hair with no volume just like if you cut it too short.. But again some of us like men have the hair thinning gene and there are so many things you can do to help this... If you would like my help and advice on thinning hair or nutrition and supplements i would be happy to help you and lead you in the right direction of what supplements to take and foods to eat and drop, and what to use on your hair that will slow thew thinning process..it takes works but dont give up you are beautiful no matter who you are on the inside and out and that is all that matters!!! I am 50, and have gorgeous, thick and healthy blonde hair. At work, we are required to wear our hair pulled back. I wear my hair in a variety of long styles, which includes braids. Everyone tells me my hair is gorgeous and I should keep it long. Bottom line is that I love my hair and if you don't like it, tough beans. I'll cut it when I feel its time.

I'm sorry but the beachy waves on SJP look like a curling mistake I made in my teens, trying to curl my hair by letting it dry in cushion curlers while I slept. Jennifer Aniston's hair is great, it always looks effortlessly done, and frames her face wonderfully. Gennifer Goodwin looks soooo cute in her pixie, lucky gal! I don't think there are "rules" for any age, your facial features and how "young" you look for your age, determine a good hairstyle, if you can pull it off - go for it. A mature woman isn't going to have a tweenage hairstyle in any case. A lot of times what I see is women being too age conscious, looking more frumpy than fabulous, they stop looking their best because of a chronological number. Take care of your skin, your hair and your body, and you will look great at any age!

I agree that putting women into categories by age or any other determiner is wrong but there is no mature woman in the world that looks good or attractive with really long hair and that has nothing to do with someone telling you what to do or putting you into age brackets! It has to do with the fact that when women get older face shape will either hang and get lost or become more prominent,that can only get more emphasized with long and straight hair! Some looks are not flattering for all age types,same thing with makeup and clothes. You will end up looking like you are trying too hard to be or feel young again,there is nothing wrong with that but you are doing it in all the wrong ways and everyone can see that. You don't want to leave an impression of a pathetic,lonely woman,do you? Strong,independent woman that knows what she wants and takes care of herself,that knows how to carry herself with dignity is something we all should aim to,especially when becoming older and more mature,that's the period when wisdom should be there,not a hormonal teenager trying to fit in.

I think it's very interesting that the pictures of what not to do are generally more attractive than those modeling your advice. To apply "guidelines" to people because they are "over 40" is ridiculous. The people at work thought I was in my early 30's until they met my 20-year-old daughter. Just because I look much younger than others my age, should I start looking/dressing like a senior citizen?

I really disagree with some of these. I don't think your age should have to limit what hairstyles you can and can't wear. If it looks good on you, wear it. I thought Nicole Kidman looked fantastic with both those styles, as did Salma Hayek and many of the others.

why can't u have long hair if u are over 40?

So are you saying that no matter what your skin tone is, use warm tones for hair color? It doesn't make sense to me, but I'll check it out.

Doesn't your hair tend to thin out as you get older? that would be my primary reasoning for wanting to keep it about shoulder length or shorter. My hair is thin now and I'm about to be 30! But I love a nice chignon and I'm too afraid to give myslef a Halle Berry pixie, even though I really want to try it.

Also - the part about updos can go for just about anybody too. For my sister's wedding, she had a photo of exactly what she wanted - and it was a chignon, with loose curls around her face. Stylish updo but still loose and had a natural feel to it. The rest of us, her bridesmaids, didn't have photos or anything, and the stylists put us (all in our 20s) in very structured updos, overly styled across the face - no one was crazy about it. One girl even restyled the front of her hair after the stylist's left. I lucked out since my hair was too short to do too much to in the first place, and I had bangs so they couldn't swoop some big long piece across the front the way they did another girl! Bottom line - overly structured updos don't always look good even on younger women!
