Melanoma It's uncommon, but cancer cells can grow under nails. Geogha says you can typically tell something's amiss if there are blue-black or brown discolored, asymmetrical lines showing up on your nail beds. Of course, there is no at-home treatment for melanoma. If you see this kind of asymmetrical discoloration under your nails, see your doctor immediately. "You'll likely need a biopsy," says Geogha.

Great information and solutions to these problems. Instead of cutting my cuticles, I use a gel cuticle remover and it works wonders. Since I started using a glass nail file, I haven't experience any nail splitting either. The tip about the floss for ingrown toe nails is great!

Oh my gosh I'm going to try the floss trick on my husbands ingrown toenails, both of his big toe nails are becoming ingrown, the skin surrounding the nail is swollen and he says it hurts very bad. I'll try this for a few days and see if there is any relief, if not, he's going to the dr!

I agree with robyne00. I've had to stop going to salons for pedicures because I'm so scared! Spas seem better because they're more expensive but doesn't mean they're safer altogether.

Good article. Be careful with nail salons too. They often contribute to these types of conditions and worse. Many use the same tools on all customers, sterilize tools improperly, or don't sterilize tools at all. The blue disinfectant many nail salons use is watered down, usually not changed as often as it should be. Some places fill it with dollar store brand Windex. The electric disinfecting machines are also outdated in some places, and many do not work properly. Beware!
