Ive gotten alot of free samples from makeup counters- little containers of clinique makeup... like multiples at once

This was such a great article. Its so sad but all these things are so true and that is why I like to do my own research on products and normally buy either directly through their main website or for some brands, the drug store.

This may be true for most Companies, but I work for a Merle Norman Studio, where our make overs truly are free, the brushes are both chemically and UV sterilized, our lesson material that is to be used on clients is removed from the container with a sanitary spatula, and the tester people put their fingers in are NEVER for use on a customer's face. I am both a licensed cosmetologist and very experienced make up artist, but would never claim to have any medical expertise about dermatology, and in fact have referred many clients to a determologist for issues ranging from rosacea to skin cancer. Perhaps the author should dig a little deeper while researching next time. Not all make up counters are created equal!

All true. I worked at Nordstrom for nearly 20 years; Testers are filthy and I will buy a product to test it before I would try it at the counter. Especially at stores like Sephora where everything is being handled. Also; Check the product you're buying that it hasn't been opened, don't buy it or return it if you have,

It's interesting to see how many people are uneducated in regards to germs. The fact that face products are refundable just shows that if you find a product you actually like, test it on something new not the actual "tester". Your skin will thank you later.

I loved this piece! No, cosmetic salespeople are in no way monsters, but they are under pressure to keep sales up. Many a time I was given wrong information (I didn't let on that I knew), and I am very swift at avoiding them. They speak to me as if I've never used makeup; not only do I use it, but I've been reviewing all brands for over thirteen years!

The only bad experience at a makeup counter ive had was in nordstroms at the chanel counter. I asked to look at a compact foundation and the lady refused to let me see anything because "it wouldnt match my skintone". I was so mad and felt that she was really rude.

While I can appreciate your little expose for it's mild level of entertainment, I have to express my level of insult after reading this. I've worked in the cosmetics industry for over 5 years for several different lines and in several different markets. While I can see some truth in what you've said, it is most definitely exaggerated. I can't help myself for wanting to set the record straight. We aren't all money hungry, make-up pushing psychos. I especially found myself cringing when I read, "They make stuff up." I don't know where you shop, or the people you spoke with, but the team I work with really are highly-trained artists and skin care experts. Not everyone will be great at there job, just like anywhere else, but I don't think it's fair to put out a general consensus like that. Yes we work on commission, but that's no secret. It's actually a pretty low percentage in comparison to what others in the other various departments make. So don't worry people, if you don't purchase that blush or lipstick from me I will still be able to pay my rent and buy myself dinner. I would like to see any of the people commenting below try to do this job- I bet you'd step down from those pedestals you're all standing on rather quickly. I'd give it about five minutes in before you'd realize that working in the cosmetics industry is not the "stand there and look pretty" job that everyone has assumed it to be.

I'm sorry, because I love the brand. But, those MAC girls drive me insane. They think they're the "cool kids in the cafeteria" and their attitude is just so high falutin'. Look ladies, you're selling mascara, not curing cancer so...get off your high horse and help me find a decent color, ok? Also, the makeup they wear really turns me off to the brand itself.

Most of this stuff is common sense, it is funny to me however how much these women think that they are better than you. Yes there's nothing wrong with working the makeup counter at a dept store but don't snub me because you think you're better than me, you sell makeup for a living don't act like you are better than others. That doesn't really get you customers, and if you're snubbing me and I can actually afford your products; I will purposely walk away just so that commission won't be yours but someone else's who can treat me with some common decency.

I agree with every thing in this article. What we need to realize is that many on the so-called drug store brands are owed by department store companies. More importantly, many of the much less expensive drug store products do the same thing and are as good as the more expensive department store item. No one has ever explained to me the difference between a $10 lipstick and a more expensive one. Someone has to pay for the ads in the fashion magazines and pretty packaging. It ends up being us!

I've never had a makeover at a counter before. I tried getting a sample once. I was like 13 and asked to try a lipgloss, and the saleswoman replied that you had to be 18 because they had "hoochies" coming in and getting makeup behind their parents' backs to go "pick up boys" and the movie theater next door. Pretty awkward situation as I was seriously just interested in the lipgloss lol.

As a professional walking thru a department store makes me cringe... Especially with the testers not to mention the brushes they must be cleaned and sanitized after every single person. Strep virus lives on your skin your spreading it. You can contract atopic dermatitis via the brushes. Eye brushes you can pink eye and a serious infection of the tear duct wich can lead to blindness. So make sure they clean them before you and after you!!!

So true! I worked as a beauty consultant for Clinique and Shiseido a few years back and I would see girls and women use lip and eye makeup straight from the tubes and palettes. I would always clean the products I saw were used, but I wasn't always there, either. Makeup counters can be disgusting!

Clinique are rude to older women. One told a woman about 50 that she was at wrong counter. This is for younger women. I told a clinique woman who was to apply makeup for an event ( i missed my appointment with Lancome) about this and she nodded. She did a horrible job!! It appeared as if i wore no makeup! And she received $10.00 for the favor in addition to a few products i bought. When I got home and saw my pale face, and no makeup look I nearly cried. My daughter agreed, looked as if i did not have a makeup artist apply makeup for an event. I am 60 plus and have younger skin. now live in midwest, from NYC so they are too laid back with makeup for older women here! Going to have to learn how to do it myself. Rude Cllinique!

I've only seen Clinique's salespeople wear white lab coats at the beauty counters. This was an interesting read, although for many of the sales oriented traits, it may be true to some extent, but I would assume that those would be true for people who only want to make money.

This article is garbage. We don't "JUDGE" you based on the price o the product you use . We ask what you are using to find out if the products you are using is doing a service or disservice to your skin . I personally never recommend products based on what I think you can afford . I can say from personal experience that Sephora is a world apart from the makeup counters described in this article. The consultants undergo extensive training in product lines and general beauty knowledge, they don't pretend to be doctors, they don't work on commission, they are very open about their amazing return policy, and although they do ask what skincare you currently use (to get a grasp on your personal preferences), they don't limit their recommendations to equally cheap/expensive prodcuts.

I am currently an Estee Lauder makeup artist, and can honestly say it depends on the brand. We are taken to 8 hr. schools ones every 4 months so that we know everything possible about the product. Same with Clinique and Sheisedo. As far as Benefit or Lancome go, they are trained to pushed products with no scientific knowledge at all. Just be smart with who you purchase from, and don't let some pretty actress or singer sell you cheap/overpriced items.

I have worked as a makeup artist and some of these things are true and some are not. The reason makeup artists are seem like nazis about having you use q-tips, sample brushes, ect. when a customer tries on makeup is that there are lots of germs! Please, don't dip your fingers in any makeup! Don't be intimidated by pushy or snotty sales people! Stick with nice sales people and have them ring up your makeup from other counters.

This was a great article. I always feel the need to justify my purchases (my husband and mother just do not understand my beauty product obsession, and I guess sometimes I don't either!) and as I flipped through each reason I can remember being in the aisle and using that exact reason for why that product must be good and therefore why I needed it. I don't think this article is against beauty or cosmetic brand managers or salespersons, this is simply an explanation of the marketing tools utilized to help get sales. It is something EVERY company does. It is just a reminder to think deeper when making a purchase as opposed to just believing what that bottle says or person working in the store tells you in the store without the having the knowledge or doing proper research about brands and ingredients.

This may be true for some make-up companies, but I beg to differ when it comes to Estee Lauder. I am a 3rd generation user of this make-up (my mom, grandma, and myself) so I know what to get and what I need. The girls are very knowledgeable and are always helpful. I usually get my products from Dillards, but my sales lady informed me that Macy's had a free gift with purchase. She didn't have to do that. But because they are so good, she already knows I will be back.

This is such an off base article. I am a manager for a cosmetics line (the number one prestige and mass brand).It is true some companies are lacking on their education offered to their BAs, but the company I work for puts us through extensive training on skin physiology and make up. I would consider myself beyond knowledgeable about my product line and competent enough to share valuable information with my customers. Yes, we are there to sell. Similar to how this website, and any other, makes most of their profit on advertisement and 'selling' brands and products. It's the industry and clearly, they are doing something right.

I buy my skincare products at counters because I am afraid of fake sites, I have seen fake sites before >.> There definitely are some nice salespeople, but I have also run into my fair share of rude ones who get mad at you for asking 1 straightforward question. With my current skincare brand, I only have 1 department store that is even within an hour of where I live, and there is only 1 SP working there. I always spend at least $500 when I go, but she wants it to be a 1-minute transaction and gets annoyed and makes me feel intimidated when I ask her how much of the product to apply. But I don't have much of a choice so I just hope that I'm applying the right amount......

while some of these may hold true to some people most of it depends on the sales person. yes the beauty advisors are trained to sell people products but only what they feel your skin will benifit from. if you dont want someone to sell you there products and to possibly judge you then dont go to the makeup counters. but yes someone is going to judge you when you are walking around with a $400 handbag but are to frugle to spend money where it really matters most; on your skin. this was a very biased article and its a shame on this website to post such a thing when clearly at the top it says expert advice and unbiased reviews.

I would say most of these are true, it really depends on the company and the salesperson. I use to work at Sephora and although we clean our brushes after each use and the store is constantly being cleaned, there is definitely germs lurking everywhere because so many people come in and touch everything, such as when they touch the eye shadows with their fingers to test out the colors. And Sephora employees, the majority I should say, really do care about helping their customers especially since there is no commission. When I worked at Sephora, I was honest to my clients about the products, such as what worked and such as finding them truly better alternatives of products than what they had already picked out. I was also always patient with my clients and spent time with them until they found what they needed and without ever being pushy. But if a client was being very rude to me, that is when I would lie to them about the products and BS because who honestly wants to help out rude and mean customers, I sure don't.

I'm sure this doesn't apply to every store and every makeup counter but I've always felt like some of the sales ladies look down their noses to some customers, depending on the way they look or talk. Sometimes they make you feel inadequate for not knowing something or for using products that are not high end. This article is crap. Sorry. My company cleans our brushes in between customers, has a very strict sanitation policy, has crazy training(in products, not selling), no commission.. Also- fun fact- we are experts so screw that. Working in a salon would be a downgrade. I freelance on the side as do most of my co-workers. Btw in regards to the commission thing, the people who do get commission get like 2%. They aren't pushy because of that- that's such a lame accusation to make. If i ask you what you use it is genuine, as is if i give you a compliment. Whoever you got your facts from were clearly bitter former employees. I have milia and white heads on my cheeks and always feel a little uncomfortable about them. The last time I was at a Chanel counter, the SA complemented me on my great skin AFTER I told her how I'm picky about product ingredients b/c of my condition. She forced me into a makeover I did not want, and then was taken back when I asked for a sample of a product instead of buying it. MILIA... I need to try products first.

While on occasion you get a makeup person who wants to sell, sell, sell, most makeup artists want to help you out as much as possible so you will come back to them. They will listen to your needs and get the best thing for them, because if not you will return the item and reduce their commission/make the managers mad. Be nice to a sales person and she will bend over backward to help you out. Try to game the system by taking 30 min of their time and not buying, or going to every counter to try to swipe samples and they will think you are a jerk. Also, though they are not my favorite things, most floor samples are sprayed with alcohol to disinfect them. and are often used by the retail workers themselves.

I have met wonderful, helpful salespeople who pitch in their time and others who have barked at me after a minute of being at the counter and have already made the purchase when I just wanted to double check if she gave me the right product color. I completely agree with Chelsea. I used to work at a cosmetics counter (in Macy's actually) and I gave honest opinions on what was best for people! I have my own skin issues so I certainly wanted to help people. And like Chelsea said, if I spend an hour analyzing your skin, recommending skin care, teaching you makeup application and applying a full face, you've taken me away from the counter to get commission on the quick easy "I have a list" sales. It's just the right thing to plan on buying something if you're going to take up their time. We also have sales goals that are strictly monitored. And while many of the girls can be snotty, there's also plenty of friendly girls (like me :)!) who genuinely enjoy helping. I'm a stay at home mommy right now so I write a blog reviewing makeup and skin care and post step-by-step directions & pictures on how to create looks (smokey eye, etc.) I respond to comments and e-mails at my blog e-mail address with any and all questions so feel free to read & ask away if you feel more comfortable with that! Even if I like a product I won't buy it from a sales person that I don't get good vibes by. There are some associates that make you feel welcome and some that look down their noses at you. That is a total turn off.

wow! some of this stuff is amazing to me! sounds like makeup counters are the mean girls of high school. lol The only 'hint' that didn't surprise me too much was how woman just pick up a product and apply with completely disregarding the germ factors. I was in Target one day (I know drugstore..o.m.g!) looking at the makeup and this (kind of wacky) woman was literally using the lipsticks on her lips without any use of a q-tip applicator when they were clearly in front of her face. I was so disgusted!

This is so true, not many people know how many germs are floating around dept counters, its disgusting. I always bring my own tools if I get lazy and dont want to do my own. And sooooo true about them making you fell bad about the products you use. I love counters that give samples - even if it is a one time use shadow - so I can avoid the germs. The one store that doesn't have this issue is Bare Essentuals b/c they guard the products like it is their life!

I'm so glad to know about the germs on the brush. Now, I'm not a germiphobe but when it comes to my skin, I want the cleanest brushes possible, so my skin doesn't breakout. If you are picky about your skin, I'd recommend bringing your own brushes!

I think this article is unfair and completely sensationalised. Many of the worlds greatest make up artists got their start working behind a counter. Way Bandy, Matin, and Kevyn Aucoyn to name a few. Many companies like MAC follow very strict rules when it comes to hygiene, not to mention that the commission these people make is not enough to warrant such dishonesty. More importantly, as in other job- you will always encounter those people who are great and enjoy what they do as opposed to those who give them a bad name

I use the Once Opened Beauty Expiration kit to mark my products with the date I open- nice kit and the lables are self laminating so the date doesnt smudge (permanent markers will smudge off because of the oils/creams in makeup - only resistant to water).

salesperson are going to talk about you, there's nothing better to do. and of course they're not going to tell you anything negative about a product. that would be plain stupid. try and they to decrease the germ by supplying sponges and tissues, but some women can figure it out and still touch and use products with the hands. Like real thoughtless women! and if they're asking you about products you use, they wanna know your routine and skin type, and price range. Would you rather them push products that are out of your range and you end up with buyers remorse? There's to sides to every story or counter in this case. I've been to nordstorm and sephora for free samples. and you really just have to find the right salesperson, some will lie and say they're out of free samples, others will give you more than they're suppose to. But SPs want to make sales not give away free things to people who are just taking advantage of a store. I would be annoyed too if I was working retail. I heard of women buying products, using it and returning it because they only needed for a day or they scooped out some of the product into another container! So cheap and shady! But what i can't stand is an incompetent SP. Like I asked a Sephora SP to help me find a good shade for a foundation but all she did was asked me what i think of the shade.

I am a counter makeup artist at a department store, and while I'm sure there are women who fit the examples provided here, Id like to let readers know, not everyone is like what is depicted here. The line I work for trains us for a full week in product knowledge (most counters train for a day), and I only sell what is needed for my client. I think that is what's going to build their trust--not pushing them to buy every item.

So true! I work temporarily in a drug store (in UK) as a customer assistant, I didn't get any training at all. Customers ask me about products that I know nothing about- and I'm not the exception! I advice them anyway because I'm expected to. Sometimes they ask me about health and medicines just because I happen to be in the pharmacy section. Of course some of the workers have been working there for years and they do care and know something. But the true is, if you need an advise, ask an expert- doctor, certified esthetician etc., not a cashier.

I work in the cosmetic counter of a department store and I am APPALLED. I think the most of all my customers and we have customer service meeting every month, and we strive to provide as much information as possible to our clients. Selling is pushed by the corporate company, yes, but making people happy is the main goal. Do people talk about you? sure, but so does your waiter, your hairdresser, and everyone else you encounter! Just be confident and don't worry about it!

@saohmong, Sephora inside JCP is a completely separate company. They use the JCP cashwrap system, which does require an ID for a return without a receipt or a return from a freestanding Sephora. Our screens will not allow us to advance without an ID. You weren't singled out for your ethnicity; we require IDs for no-receipt returns to prevent people from returning lots of products that may have been stolen. It's a loss prevention issue, that's all. :)

Some of this is inaccurate. I work at a Sephora, and when I ask questions about your current routine, it's not to judge you-- it's to figure out what you've tried and if it's worked for you, because I don't want to suggest something I know won't work. I also ask because I want to know how much time you want to spend on a beauty/skincare routine. I'm not judging you if you're an on-the-go woman and want something that multitasks. If I compliment you, it's because I want to make your day better or because I genuinely am jealous of your long eyelashes. Also, no one in Sephora works on commission, so it's not like we are overly invested in getting you to buy everything. The beauty industry isn't 100% what this article portrays. If it was, I wouldn't be working there.

I used to work makeup at Kohls. I will never touch a sample product to my skin again. I kept my department as sanitized as possible, but I didn't have time to clean every item after every person who used it. You don't know who that one person who used it before you was. On top of that, when I went to train and such at other stores I was pretty horrified at how many managers had no interest in cleaning their brushes, applicators, eyeliners, lipsticks or blushes. Most of them thought cleaning everything (or most things) once a week was enough... There are rashes and skin infections not to mention viruses that you can catch from whoever used these things before you. If you're going to get a makeover that's fine but if you don't actually see her sanitizing her brushes, leave. I actually saw one woman lick her finger and wipe it on someone's face to fix the eyeshadow.

A cosmetologist learns very little in school about make up. We learn how to apply it and things like that but your best advice comes from research. Check out if a line has bad ingridients or are more natural and where they can be found. Look up the ingrident names and you will find out what they are and the diffirent uses for them.

This article makes me furious. Ive never seen this website until tonight and it wasnt a good thing to see first. Whoever wrote this is bitter and mad about something. I wear one of those "white coats" and I dont claim to be a doctor, however I am an EXPERT, and I dont lie to my clients or give them fake compliments. Also I am a very honest person, and I am highly trained on skin and my products. Im extremely insulted, and you look like an idiot whoever wrote this. Im also NOT on commission, and most arent, even though your dumb article says so. Also at Sephora, they are CLERKS. They are the ones not trained. How about before writing an article, you get some FACTS.

Having worked in the cosmetic industry for over 7 years I can tell you that this article is taken completly out of context. Yes there are germs and yes there is marketing but not every makeup artist works on comission and there are many cosmetic counter managers and artists throughout high end and low end retail industries that are very passionate about what they do and care about what they do. This article puts a negative condintatiion on the cosmetic world that isn't entirely true. My advice is to shop around, do research and find a sales representative that you trust and respect. Ask about their credentials, how long they have been in the industry, also remember the higher end retail the higher the standards are in most cases. You make the decision to sit and spend, we are there to assist you not force you.

Cosmeticscop.com is great at helping sort out the BS, especially if you read Paula Begoun's books. Each line has good and bad. A sales person will never admit any of their products are bad. They are salespeople and not scientists or dermatologists. I like to go to the cosmetics counters informed. I get especially offended when a salesperson will have the nerve to tell me that my dermatologist does not know what she is talking about. Really?!!!!!

Ha the first page reminded me of when i was at Dior and they where having this free make over event at the mall and its wasnt really nice at all they showed the exact same products to everyone and i was expecting for them to help us really choose something personalized for us ! anyways my face is almost clear from my acne now, but back when that event took place i had way more acne and i remember the apparently make up artist doing my make up, when she was finish with a few of her brushes she gave them to the artist next to her to use on her client and the client next to me gave me an odd look i guess as she was examining my face the brushes where just used on before and all i thought was i feel bad for you all the bacteria that was on me is now being transferred to you ...

I used to work for a major skin care and cosmetics line. We were well educated on the products, how to use them, who they would be good for, etc. If someone told me she used the 3-in-1 cleanser from the drugstore I saw that as an opportunity. If she had bothered to come to the counter, then that meant she could most likely afford the products. If not, then we had credit in my store. I could always find a way to hook up the people who really did want to shell out the money with the products, which really were worth buying. I still use that line, and it's been 10 years.

The counter people don't want to see the average person walk in. They want the person that is totally made up. A friend and I did an experiment for a college class. She dressed up and I was just in my normal dress. Every store we walked in to she was approached constantly and I was left to my own devices. She then asked to talk to the person in charge or contacted the company and none of the people she talked to could explain why it happened on that it wasn't their policy.

Some of these are tried and true techniques (i.e. complimenting, "free" makeover), but as a former beauty salesperson and an independent makeup artist some of these things are not consistent. I think the biggest takeaway is the level of experience of the beauty advisor you are working with. No matter what they should be professional, articulate, knowledgeable and helpful. I would never send a client away with a product I didn't think was right for them. No buyer's remorse!

I've worked for Clinique, Prescriptives, Lancome, Orgins and I clean off everything everyday, The lips sticks I scrap and spray with alcohol. The brushes we have brush cleaner and wipe them the best we can. The eye shadows we brush off, The mascaras we have wands tips we use so that no one ever has a dirty or used wands. Eyes liners we sharpen and spray with alcohol. We are VERY careful. We will turn away people who have any eye conditions or skin issues that could be a threat to clients, of course politely. Nothing ever touches another persons face. As far as stores such as Kohls or Walgreens or CVS they have thier own standards. I do know the higher end stores take great care so infections are not spread.

Well, I've worked in cosmetics stores... and currently work in a beauty store only opened to licensed professionals and beauty school students... but I've never been trained to be a consultant (because it was never a requirement, and I was only in one department store - Kohl's)). However, not every beauty employee you see is untrained, a high school dropout, etc. (what a lame stereotype to set on all of us! Haha). I let a customer know that although I'm not a trained professional, I can still give them my opinion on a product, or relay what I've heard customers/reviewers say about a product (like the new It's a 10 Finishing Spray: I've heard plenty of great things about it, and finally tried today - I like it!). What I find a little humorous, and kind of mind-boggling, is that many of my customers will ask questions about products... even though they've gone to beauty school and many have been working in the cosmetology field for years. Anyway, I've always known of germs in cosmetic testers... but what's always shocked me more than seeing women rub their fingers in/on everything and apply it to their face, is receiving a catty attitude after warning them of the risk of infections, and even herpes (yep! A coworker of mine had a decent sore on her lip after applying a MAC lipglass tester directly to her lips). If a beauty employee gives you this warning, please don't assume he or she is bossing you around. And I agree with Omnikitty about many of her points. As I've said before, I always let a customer know I'm not trained, but will provide as much assistance as I can. If they don't want my help, it's no skin off my bones. :) I don't have any shame in redirecting them to someone with more product knowledge, or calling someone at another location to help us out. I do not play on a customer's insecurities just to make a sale (if I give you a compliment, I mean it. But sometimes I get shy when it comes to that, so...), nor am I snobby to anyone. Not only do I want you to be a regular customer (even if I couldn't provide you with more help, which I always apologize for if I haven't been much help to you), I'm also NOT heartless. :P

I've had one 'free' makeovers where I had to stop the process because my face started breaking out in HIVES from a 'hypoallergenic' brand that was supposedly for ultra-sensitive skin which is what I had. It was just the cleaning product., I was literally begging the rep to stop and allow me to wash the product off my face with cold water. By the time I got it off, I would have loved to have had a paper bag to wear over my head because it took a full week for my skin to calm down and I was constantly being asked "what happened to you?" That incident made me extremely cautious about buying any that was on the expensive side, because returning items can sometimes be the customer's worst nightmare. Until I finally found a product line that worked for me, I ended up using a lot of samples. I actually asked if I could purchase a sample size, so no 'grifting' here. I don't like a heavy sales pitch and it sometimes takes more than one use to determine if a product is right for me or not. I was interested in trying the product before paying for a full sized version of the product. What sold me on the product I currently use? I was at a party that was partly sponsored by the company in question, and there was NO sales pitch at all, but a makeup artist made people up with the makeup made by the corporation. (Not a home sale brand, but one of the top brands you would find in a department store or Sephora) I went to the local department store, and they had a 'trial size' version of the skin care line that they sell. I was able to use the product often enough (It can take up to a week for me to realize a product is just not working) and I ended up a loyal customer. Perhaps instead of having 'makeovers' what companies should do is promote a trial size package that will get customers hooked on the product instead.

As a licensed cosmetologist and former dept store employee, I would like to clear some of this mess up. While you may associate cosmetic counter girls with beauty school dropouts, keep this in mind... some of them have licenses, some of them are college students, some of them have worked a long time in the beauty trade. I am a biology undergrad with a scholarship-earning GPA that allows me to study at an excellent private university. I have two academic working papers soon to be published, in literature and biology. This year I am volunteer teaching two languages at a vocational college overseas where I am learning my third language. I will soon go on to medical school, research emphasis. Not all cosmetic professionals are dimwitted, especially those who are licensed in their trade. [1] Germs are everywhere, yes, but a licensed professional knows what she’s doing. A professional will stop a passerby from sampling without a brush. She will clean the brushes IN FRONT OF YOU as she learned in school. She also knows how to slice and scrape off cosmetics in the case of undesired exposure. [2] Returns aren't always easy. Nordstrom’s is notoriously in the people-pleasing business. Dillards is not so much. [3] They play on your insecurities if they need to make a sale or if they think you’d really benefit from the product. If they get a base pay, they don’t need a sale as much as someone working off commission. [4] They make things up if they don’t know what they are talking about. If they don’t know the product, then yes, they’ll make it up as they go. Rarely you will find someone who will honestly admit their ignorance. Look for a licensed professional and you minimize the BS. [5] Many beauty counter salespeople are actually licensed professional cosmetologists and estheticians, hence the lab coat trend. Technically, you aren't supposed to wear the white coat unless you are licensed. Use this to your advantage. If the “white” coat is looking more gray or like a child’s painting apron... move on! [6] The makeover is free... sometimes. Ask upfront about any costs and hold them to it. If they spend an hour making you look like a goddess- then yes it’s a sting if there is no sale. But on days when the store is slow and boring, they might be satisfied that you made their day pass quicker. If they work on commission or have high sales goals, there is more pressure to sell. If they work for a set hourly rate, it’s not such a big deal. [7] They judge you... just like everyone else. Sharing your routine and preferences, however, can benefit you both. They can better analyze what products will suit you by knowing how much time you can devote each morning & night, what concerns you’d like to focus treatment on, etc. [8] They keep an eye out for chronic samplers because they can get in a heap of trouble. If store management notices the same person loading up on samples, they can punish the employee for not pushing sales or accuse them of supplying their “friends” with too many samples. If there is a chronic sample hog going around, many managers will order their employees to withhold samples from that person in hopes of making the person leave. There are specific rules about how often a salesperson can give out samples and breaking those rules can be considered workplace theft. [9] They keep their mouths shut about contents if they’re desperate for a sale. A good salesperson will tell you upfront and offer alternatives. Licensed professionals are more likely to be honest about this because in school they take ethics and chemistry courses. Of course, you can always read the ingredients yourself. If the ingredients aren’t listed on the product, the store should have an ingredient list like a MSDS sheet for fear of allergic reactions. [10] They talk about you behind your back... like you don’t? Even if you don’t think you’re a gossip, chances are you’ve shared anecdotes about workplace adventures. This is true about people in general- some gossip chronically and some make rare mentions of strange incidents. Some things you should know... Most of the beauty counter salespeople get paid better than most of the department store- not minimum wage. The clothing sales reps at my former job were paid at least $8-10/hr. Cosmetics and Fragrance people were paid $15-25/hr or more depending on their experience, qualifications, and ability to sell. $15 base pay is NOT minimum wage. Don't be afraid to ask them what their qualifications are-- ask if they are licensed and don't be worried that you'll hurt their feelings. If they pretend to be something they aren't, why not call them on it? If they ARE licensed, they probably have a small copy of their license in their wallet- many states require this.

I was told my a Sephora employee inside a Jcpenney's store that I have to show my id if I'm returning my purchases. One of the sales gal said that policy just went into effect a week ago. I then went to another Sephora store in a mall and they told me that they have never heard of that policy. I did my refunds there w/o showing my id. Now I'm wondering if the Penney's Sephora is owned by Penney's or Sephora and why did I have to show my id there? Makes me feel like I'm being single out cause I'm Asian? I've since then never shop there again even tho is closer to my home. I just go to the one that doesn't give me bull when I need to do returns or exchanges.

This article would be a lot more accurate and a lot less biased if the author had interviewed people who are currently in the industry, not just those who were at one time. There are vast differences between cosmetic lines (Cover Girl vs Georgio Armani, for example). There are also vast differences between retailers (Wal-Mart vs. Nordstom's.) Kind of like the difference between this crap and the more legitimate public interest articles out there.

I am a makeup artist for a very successful cosmetics line. There are some truths to this article (like about germs-customers are so gross sometimes!) But I strongly disagree with the idea that "makeup counter salespeople play on insecurities." Some may do this, but not all. Every person, within every field, brings a unique character and ethic to their work (for better or worse.) One thing that I love about my job is that I get the opportunity to make every client I work with feel better about themselves. One of the many ways that I do that is by paying SINCERE and SPECIFIC compliments when appropriate. There is something beautiful to be found within each person on this earth, and EVERY woman (especially those that are experiencing a blip of self- doubt) can benefit from a kind word. So stop trying to turn the fact that I am a nice woman into some conspiracy theory. Get a life, and next time write something worth reading.

I know the salespeople give false compliments. I use to work at a department store in the cosemetics department and we told customers all the time what great skin they had (even if it was less than perfect). The customers then feel good and will most likely buy something from you.

Some of this is just common knowledge: germs, talking b/h your back (I'm mean, who DOESN'T talk about customers?) & makeover's not being free. I mean, they'll tell you if a make over requires a purchase. And from my experience, if I ask a question they didn't know the answer to, they asked someone else. I know its their job to sell the product, but I've never felt pressured to purchase something I didn't need or want. One woman at a Perspectives, actually recommended other products for me to use in addition to their brand. I could be a bad judge of character, but I've never felt like I was being played by a BA.

I have never been a fan of makeup counter workers. They always treat me bad, just because I take my (good, quiet) kids in with me. They act like I'm "below them" just because I don't get a sitter for the kids, before I shop! I have good children, so why would I get a sitter. Plus, I enjoy spending time with them. So, I usually buy online.

This is very true, when asked "why product do you currently use?" my face face was getting over my "monthly visitor" and I answered their product and she said "no wonder your face looks bright and even.". Had I mentioned another product I'm sure I would have gotten a different answer. As for talking about others, we all do that in whatever job you have.

As someone who works for a make up store I am truly offended by this. The company I work for sends us away for a week when we are hired to learn everything there is to know about skincare, complexion, and color. We are constantly sent to trainings and have to become certified in these areas to even keep our jobs. Testers are cleaned before we apply them to our clients and same goes for our brushes. If I give a compliment to someone it is sincere. I don't go around giving everyone the same compliment. This article makes me so furious. We also receive brand trainings from EVERY brand we carry in the store every couple of months to keep us updated. This just plain angers me.

This “article” is all speculation. Beauty Advisors, depending on their line, ARE indeed trained by the cosmetics companies. It's the department store that pushes BAs sales and reprimands them for not making sales goals and signing people up for credit cards. And whether or not you are "judged", "played on your insecurities" or otherwise lied to is dependent on the beauty advisor. I was not one of those kinds of beauty advisors. I let my executive know from day one that I would not bullshit a customer in order to make a sale. And no, my sales weren’t great, but I had some very loyal customers. Samples: stores barely provide you with adequate product, let alone samples, and “shark” BAs hoard them from the other BAs, so very often, there aren’t any available. Germs: Absolutely! As much as we try to “clean” them those testers are filthy Free Makeovers: You are not required to purchase anything, and yes, a good sales person will give you a hard sell. As I said, I was not one of those BAs. I did however take my time with makeovers, which took me away from selling for 45+ minutes while the other shark BAs would ring all the sales for themselves. Expecting to get one for “free” is being cheap. Buy something. Or tip your BA when she’s done (most stores frown on that as well, FYI) Most BAs are just trying to pay their rent. This article makes them look like backstabbing, lying, cheating b*tches. And you should apologize for that.

Now let us see an article from the customers' perspective. I could tell some stories; none of this is surprising at all. it is painfully obvious that the counter sales people have no clue about the products or how to develop good customer relations. Their philosophy is to sell as much as they can to everyone they can because they most likely will not see them again, particularly in a mall setting. However, the truth from the customer's perspective is that if you show that you are concerned about gaining the customer's trust and develop a good working knowledge of the products in order to determine what really works best for that customer, you will have a customer for life. We all know when someone is BSing and we all know when we are being made fun of and looked down on. By the same token, we definitely know when someone knows their business and can really offer solutions. Strive to be that person, and you will have my loyalty - simple a that.

The article really should be called "What Cosmetics Companies don't want you to know". The people working behind cosmetics counters are following the advice of the corporate giants, usually with no cosmetics experience. Those on the retail end of it are, whether you chose to believe it, very hard working. Many are parents who have to work many a nights, weekends, and long holiday hours and to be standing on your feet all day with an unreasonable goal set by the retailers and the cosmetics giants is exhausting. And to top it off, you have women, girls, what have you, come in, ask to have their make up done and to purchase nothing? Do these same women not pay when they have their hair cut or their tanning sessions? The reason they do the things they do is because people have no tact or manners. You go into a make up department to purchase, not just for giggles. Go to Walmart if you want to dick around, just don't waste someones time who has mouths to feed.

I am also a medical Aesthetician & see nothing wrong or slanderous about this article. I once went to the Lancome counter and after the salesgirl spent 10 minutes convincing me that an $86 dollar serum would have my skin glowing after one week, could not tell me the active ingredient. She had to look it up in a book & still couldn't find it & furthermore had no idea how to pronounce any of the ingredients. I'm assuming she got the job due to her french accent & appearance, she definitely looked the part. Another Lancome salesgirl refused to tell me the name of her lipstick because it wasn't Lancome. I've had friends who worked at beauty counters and were constantly telling stories of customers. I've witnessed salesgirls in Nordstrom's telling customers that certain products would "erase" their hyperpigmentation...these products contained miniscule amounts of kojic acid. Frankly, I don't know which part of this article is so offensive, it's absolutely true and happens every day. I don't know how many times I've cleaned makeup brushes & products only to have someone apply them directly to their face...not to mention children playing in them. Having the sales people wear labcoats & use charts is an excellent marketing tool, would you take them as seriously in just a shirt & pants? I can only hope that those of you who feel so wronged by this article are the exception, because you're definitely the minority.

FYI, Nordstrom's has the best return policy ANYWHERE and it is to put the CUSTOMER FIRST at all times. This article is horrible! Shame on you for printing such slander. I worked for Lancome for many years and I am a freelance makeup artist. As a Lancome consultant we were trained on the skincare products and their benefits. Traing was done 2 x a year. We are encouraged to make long lasting relationships by offering products customers will use and love and that will enhance their features so they will come back. Not lie to them to get them to buy more products and never see them again. Repulsive!

As a Saks 5th Ave beauty advisor i have to say that this article is just wrong and very misleading. I have been in the beauty business for over 10 years and would never lie to, or mislead my customers. I do not judge them by the products they use nor do I not tell them about a specific ingredient that is getting bad press at the moment. I do all I can to be in the know about the latest trends and skincare ingredents. Estee Lauder has a great training program and we are throughly trained in every aspect of new products so our customers can be well informed before they buy. You can get a sample from me at anytime, just as long as it suits your needs and i will call you and find out if it worked for you. I personally will not buy a product unless i have sampled it first. It is very wasteful to buy a whole product and then not like it and return it, the used product is just thrown away. Make up lessons are free, and while I do hope that you will love something and buy, I am not hurt and do not talk about you when you leave. How unprofessional! I hope that you ladies who have been to cosmetics counters and have recieved sub par service come to my counter one day and see what passionate, honest, and exprienced service is.

I agree with being careful about the sanitation involved in the sales of cosmetics. AND I fully agree that the people behind the counter pretend to know about skin care...as an esthetician I fell insulted when someone tells me some bs that I know isn't true and I always call them out on it. If they dont have a license, their advice is taken with a grain of salt. I work in retail as well, and I try to be honest with customers. When people complain about their looks to me and ask what can they do - I straight shoot it...I never lie and say "oh your dark circles aren't noticeable" I tell them what I know to be facts and let them make their own decisions on products. And I always provide samples or try products on them so they can be sure about a purchase. AND always mention the return policy. Being honest has earned me many return customers and loyal clients. There are times I even refer someone to brands my store doesnt carry. In the end..commission doesn't override my genuine interest in solving skin care issues or having the client have the best makeup for their skin. I have found this be the best policy in customer service.

I find this article to be a pretty stereotypic attack on the sales people in the industry. I used to work in the cosmetics department as a salesperson (both commissioned and noncommissioned) and not once did I "make something up" because I didn't know the answer. I would explain I actually don't know the answer to that and will research it and let them know my findings. The store I worked at carried multiple vendors and they offered us training on products inclusive of the ingredients and what exactly they do. Make overs I've given were always complimentary.. but I've found the customers were happy with the results and found that I am indeed sincere in answering their needs and not trying to upsell. Sometimes they would buy, sometimes not. Sometimes they come back and bring friends. I asked what products the customer is currently using so I know whether or not they're even using the right/wrong product for their skin, and even if their current regime is what's causing problems in the first place. As for talking about customers behind their back, its the really kind customers or really freaky customers that are remembered. An example is who are you going to remember more when you're driving on the road? The person who cut in front of you, or someone driving normally in the lane next to you? We all talk.. it's silly to assume salespeople are any different.

I know of a lady that got a staph infection in her eye from a "free makeover" when she was Mystery Shopping. It actually was pretty bad and she was out of commission for quite some time. Her contract with the Mystery Shopping prevented her from revealing herself as a Mystery Shopper and going after the store for damages. Gross.

Wow!! That was definitely informative and definitely made me think!! My mom's friend used to work in a department store make-up counter and she always used to talk about the people she interacted with on any particular day and we would all laugh about it but in my head I would feel bad for those people (because we were having a good laugh at their expense) and it made me swear to myself NEVER to buy make-up or get make-overs at a department store make-up counter!! And that first tip about the bacteria was disgusting!! I've seen girls in Sephora do the exact same thing that was stated with the lipstick in this article. Gross!! How can you apply something directly to your lips that has been open and used by God know's who?!?! When I want to try something I grab a tissue and wipe the top few layers off and then swipe a sample on the back of my hand or on the backside of my wrist...those are the only two places I would EVER test make-up that is opened in any beauty store.

I went to a make up event to get a full make over by a national artist. She double dipped brushes, including mascara and gloss. I was the last make over of the night. I was so disgusted! These are national professionals! Now I go out of my way to use the newest sample products I can a disinfect the best I can. Don't be shy to speak up and ask for what you want!! It's your health and your money.

This is really terrible to think about, which is why i hate going to beauty counters most of the time. I like the fact that you can sample, but to know most of this stuff is ridiculous. I feel more confident about it now that I actually sell cosmetics, but since it's not a full time job I am more truthful with my customers rather than trying to play the devil on their shoulder.

this whole article is full of reasons to shop somewhere that doesn't give commissions. i always did feel like i was being sold to vs. actually being given good advice. i guess that's why i usually try to shop at a store like Sephora for my beauty products.

OMG this is all sooo true! I was so excited to see this article, because its not something commonly talked about! This is only true for the ones that work on commission. There is so much drama that goes on behind the scenes its insane! I worked at a beauty counter (not dropping names) for about 2 1/2 years and I was probably the most horrible salesperson they ever had lol

This is a really informative articles. I'm sure that while most salepeople are motivated strictly by their comissions, there are those who really want to advise consumers in their beauty endeavors. I agree with the sample products, they probably are full of germs and bacteria.

I worked in cosmetics for 5 years and I can assure you that most of these facts aren't necessarily true. YES the bacteria thing is a fact, but not all make up artists are out to get you. In fact, Sephora MUA don't get commission and really aren't interested in hard selling. Also, I AM an expert on skincare and make up. Sure, I don't know every fact about every product, but there is rigorous training that we go through to understand skin and ingredients etc. This may be true for some, maybe even most, but def NOT all. The problem is that working in retail is difficult, so most don't stay in the industry to get real experience/knowledge. I was really offeneded reading this because I never felt like I just blatanly lied to people OR talked behind people's backs. I think it doesn't matter what your occupation is, your personality is what determines how kind you are to people.

This is a cynical and disappointing look a beauty salespeople. The people behind the counter aren't just sitting there all day waiting for you to become their best friend. They're there to sell product. Of course they will be nice to you, avoid mentioning any negatives an talk about you when you leave. Everyone in the service industry does those things. It's called human nature.

I've only gone once and I really liked the girl at ultra. Even though I told her I was using biore which is cheap she still spent a lot of time with me and had me use dermalogica and I also really love the foundation she gave me which was the 2 things I needed and why I went to her. She never trired to push anything else off on me. I just wish there were more people like her and less like the people in this article.

This is said like it is. I never accept the free makeovers because sales girls will pressure me to buy. And the stories they make up! One time I was purchasing a product a lady asked me my age and after I told her she said "I had acne in grade 11 to". I'm not stupid, it was obv that she was on comission.
