Brushes

The shape of brush you choose will play a major part in the end result. Again, you don't have to spend a million bucks to look like, totally great -- just know what will work for your needs.

"If you're going for volume and curl," says Ring, "it is best to use a round brush with a barrel anywhere from 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 inches depending on the size of the curl you're after." Try the Marilyn Tuxedo Pro, $23.

If a straight, sleek look is what you're after, it's all about the paddle brush. "They're fantastic brushes, but you don’t need to drop $200 on a Mason Pearson," says Mari. "A $12 Paul Mitchell Paddle Brush will work just fine."

Oval brushes work wonders for creating straight styles with a hint of bend. Mari prefers a vented one so the hot air passes through the brush and speeds up drying time. Try the Oliva Garden Ceramic + Ion Turbo Vented Oval Hairbrush, $23.

I still don't know how a paddle brush helps to get sleek straight hair XP I'll still buy to brush my hair after I apply products to it. I heard using a comb too much can cause split ends :O

Great tips, blowdrying my hair is something I always have a problem with as I have wild, frizzy curls! Will get working on these steps! :)

Loved the article BUT I agree with previous posters ... would have been hugely more effective to show a woman doing her OWN hair.

Great tips, but I'd rather see pics of someone drying her OWN hair, (that is what the story's about) not a stylist doing it.
