I'm Going to Copy Kristen Stewart's Modern Smoky Eye -- Here's How

Posted 05/03/11 at 01:23PM by Audrey Fine

Last night while I was sitting on the couch watching "MythBusters" re-runs, the glitterati were out and about at the painfully posh Met Gala event in NYC.

Also known as "fashion's biggest night," the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute ball always draws the creme de la A-list creme and last night was no exception. All the requisite gorgeous girls were there dressed to the nines; Salma Hayek, Diane Kruger, Sarah Jessica Parker, Iman, Beyonce, and so on.

But, last night, in addition to the usual suspects, a couple of young guns were also on hand to show that they can hold their own with the heavy hitters. Kristen Bell, Taylor Swift and Kristen Stewart all looked every bit as polished and poised as their more seasoned counterparts. And, I, for one, am loving K. Stew's (did I really just type that?) modern smoky eye.

The look, paired with a nude lip, was incredibly striking with her red and black Proenza Schouler gown. In fact, I love it so much that I went straight to the source, makeup artist to the stars, Beau Nelson, to find out exactly what he did so I can attempt to copy it the next time I have more to do than veg on the couch. Nelson said that "Kristen loves to always try something different and we've never done a smoky eye that stayed so close to the lashes, it was almost a little punk."

Here's what Nelson said he did to achieve the slightly punk look:

Step 1: "I started by applying CoverGirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundation, $10 with a synthetic brush in a circular motion to give her skin an even, radiant glow and added a touch of concealer where needed."

Step 2: "On her eye, we wanted to try something a little different than the traditional smoky eye, so I started by lining the entire eye with CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Black Fire, $6, and smudging it all around the eye. I then went over it close to the lash line with the CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Liner in Black, $6, for added drama and diffused the edges. To set the liner, I applied the black shade of CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast in Onyx Smoke, $8, so the black would stay in place all night, and finished by lining the inner rim of her eye with the Liquiline Blast. I then curled her lashes and applied CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion in Black, $8, two coats on the top and one on bottom."

Step 3: "On Kristen's lips, I first applied foundation to create a nude canvas and then CoverGirl LipPerfection lip color in Kiss, $6, applying it in a tapping motion with my finger. I finished her lips with CoverGirl ShineBlast Lip Gloss in Glow, $6 which she took with her along with CoverGirl Clean Pressed Powder, $8 for a quick touchup later."

So, there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth. Let me know how creating the eye goes for you (and I'll share my attempt too). And, if you want to know how to get your eyelashes more gorgeous than ever before, try this super-simple maneuver. (Seriously, it's so simple even I can do it!)
And the survey says...

There's nothing modern or new about this look... it's the same old tired "too much black eyeliner" look. It makes her eyes look small and slitty, especially the lining the inner rim part, which any eye doctor will tell you youi should NEVER do. Also, she needs to wash and brush her greasy, straggly hair, and do something about her ragged part; she looks like a street person who stole a glamorous dress.
