For me-necessary!
My hair was so fried last year from coloring and not getting regular trims that my stylist recommended this to me. Pretty Great!
I don't use this every time I wash my hair. My hair gets super oily, so I use Pantene Aqua Light regularly (no residue) and this about once every two weeks or so. I really don't think this leaves so much residue itself, however. So my hair is wavy/curly and quite frizzy and poofy when I let it air dry. Because of this, I wash my hair at night and let it dry overnight. The days after I use this shampoo my hair is softer than usual and doesn't feel dry. It doesn't feel heavy or greasy either!
