New York City dermatologist Whitney Bowe, M.D., is studying what happens when acne and rosacea patients use probiotics as a skin treatment and in their diet, and she's seeing significant results with both. Topically, the good bacteria in probiotics can kill the bad acne-causing bacteria. And oral probiotics (whether in yogurt or supplements) affect the "gut-brain-skin axis": when your digestive system slows down, high levels of bad bacteria develop, which leads to inflammation and triggers acne and rosacea flare-ups. Probiotics help, er, move things along.
