Lips get thinner and drier with age. Dark lip liner and matte lipstick draw attention to the fine lines around your lips.

After
"Lipstick usually has a longer wear than gloss," explains celebrity makeup artist Sonia Kashuk, but gloss makes lips look more full. She suggests applying lip color, then topping with gloss for a fresh, youthful shine. If your color strays into lines, use a clear wax lip liner, like DuWop Reverse Lipliner ($19, sephora.com), to keep color from traveling.

I recently noticed how my beloved pink shimmer eye shadows are making me look tired. I read this article and switched to satin neutral tones and I'm amazed at the difference.

Pretty much common sense. As you age makeup tends to pool up into fine lines. Less is usually best.

I will not put away my shimmer shadow no matter what!! This photo has it in the wrong side of her lid. It should be brushed and blended on the outside portion of her lid, not the inside corner, with a lighter shimmer at the browbone area. Shadow should not be distinctive there at all. That example pictured isn't aging, it's just wrong.

While I'm not at the point where many of these really apply to me in the sense of looking younger yet, I think many of the tips are great for any age. Just common sense. The first tip of not using shimmery stuff is going to be a tough one though, I like my shimmer!!

The comparison pics really help to make a stronger case for each suggestion. One problem for some people is that eyeliner and shadow creeps around when lids are saggy. I notice that in the last picture. I wonder if she has a problem with shadow or liner.

When I compare the last before/after photos, I tend to think her eyes look more "open" without the eyeliner. BUT I know that a little eyeliner and tamed brows and give a more "made up" look without using much product and time and energy. Along with the idea of filling in the brows, they should also be about one shade lighter than your hair. By doing this, you will keep a youthful look and when filling in your brows, they won't appear to be so heavy. It was very refreshing to see a "real" model older than a 20's something. I could definitely use to erase 10 years. I'd give anything to be in my thirties again!

I had a hard time with eyeshadow too until I started using Bobbi Brown cream shadow. Not the glitter, just the cream. A lot of neutral and you can even put it on with your finger. Worth the price

Getting rid of the shimmer, lightening up on the lipstick, and going for neutral facial enhancers were all highly appropriate tips for the featured model. You can wear shimmer as you age, but you have to know where to apply it and what colors to use. I've seen a lot of women my age (55) who look dull and dried up because they've gone too matte. Most of us can't wear bright colors anymore; that's true. But there are lots of soft, beautiful shades that would have looked lackluster when we were young and now look elegant and refined. A soft lip pencil that matches your lip color can become your best defense against lipstick drifting into creases around your mouth. And the fantastic new cream and gel eyeliners were made for us (even though they weren't really). Plus, how fabulous is it that there are now mascaras that promote eyelash growth and really work?

Tips 3, 4 & 5 are good for most women of any age. * Tip 1: I tried all matte shadow and looked mummified. A little shimmer is not a bad thing. All matte can make eyes look dull & dried up. Keep the shimmer to the center of the lid, avoiding most constantly visible wrinkled areas. A little shimmer (not the metallic look in the photo) keeps eyes looking bright and open). * Tip 2: If you are over 40, i would say be cautious of matte lipstick; and over 50, avoid it: it makes the face look dead, and dull skin may already be a problem. Fresh colors, not too bright, not too pastel, make the face look brighter than dark ones. Of course, colors should be suitable to one's skin color, don't just go with what's fashionable.

good tips, but the makeup artists should suggest some colors and makeup lines that have the products they are advocating (the only one I saw was for a neutral lipliner). I have been hunting for neutral, matte colored eye shadows for months and almost every line in every color has shine--and I have the extra difficulty of needing cream shadows because the powders irritate my eyes. If there is ever a follow-up on this article, would love to see some product recommendations!

I think those were some great tips for when I get older. I showed my mom the article and she said she's been doing a couple of them for a few years but there were some new ones she hadn't done yet. Thanks for the tips TB!!! My only complaint (along with others I've noticed) the model that was showing her eyebrows. I read in another article on this site that it is best to pick a shade that is 1 shade LIGHTER than your natural brow color. It definitely looked like she went darker. And her brows could have used a good waxing to thin them out a little. They were too thick and bushy and I agree that if she fixed that BEFORE filling them in, she would definitely look at least 10 years younger!

It's hard to notice any difference, when all you want to notice are her eyebrow's. She would look younger with them lightened

In many of the photos there was only a subtle difference. As we age, it does happen gradually. A woman doesn't see the changes in her face unless she looks at pictures of herself from a few years back. There need be only subtle changes in make-up to even out those differences. Except for sunscreen, which I'm afraid is a major issue and you need to start young, when your skin looks so perfect you don't think you need to do anything.

Like a couple of other comments, I didn't see the difference in the photos. I even closed one eye, looke at one, then the other...still couldn't see any difference. The only one was where it looked a bit 'glittery' under her eyes, but that was about eyeliner and not anything under her eyes....I thought she looked the same OR even younger in the 'before' photo. It didn't tell me anything on looking younger....much less TEN years younger. Not!

Agreed, not looking Much younger, however, the tips are accurate and without taking care of your skin from the get go (about 12 yrs old) your just sunk, have to do more, always wear sunblock of at least 55 Neutrogina Dry Touch is my pic for the BEST, 12month/365 days, 20min before going out, putting on bare, naked skin, ie: MUST go on FIRST!! Ben doing this since I was 12, now nobody believes I'm 56!
