Road Test: 9 Natural Deodorants
Even the most organic-obsessed people generally say "bring on the chemicals" when it comes to deodorant because the natural stuff just doesn't get the job done. Or does it? We did the (sometimes stinky) testing for you and found that these nine natural deodorants really do work
As a beauty editor, I'm game to try just about everything. Fish pedicure? Sure. DIY avocado face mask? No problem. In fact, the only beauty product that makes me want to hide under my desk is a natural deodorant.
It's not that I don’t love natural products. My everyday cleanser is by Tata Harper; my favorite shampoo and conditioner are by Rahua. But when it comes to deodorant, give me Secret Clinical Strength any day -- because in my experience, natural deodorants don't do what they're supposed to.
Recently, however, I noticed that a slew of new natural deodorants was hitting shelves. With hopes that these would be better than their predecessors, I pitched a "natural deodorant road test" to my editor (secretly hoping she'd think the idea was lame -- or at least assign it to someone else). But, she went for it -- and I found myself trapped in my worst beauty nightmare with 20-some-odd tubes to try -- and no matter how long I hid under my desk, there was still a story to file.

Being a resourceful reporter, I came up with a way to test the deodorants without having to be publically smelly. I wore them on my morning runs during the two hottest weeks of the summer. I did a mid-way sniff test as well as a post-run sniff to see how the formulas held up. And the ones that scored the highest got an all-day tryout on weekends -- when I would only be seeing my closest friends.
Not surprisingly, they didn’t all make the cut. But these are the nine natural deodorants that made it through to round two. They're ranked in order from my favorite to my least favorite, and I spell out what makes each one special.
