Granola bars When you're on a health kick and decide to spend your Saturday morning hiking instead of sleeping in, the No. 1 snack that gets tossed into your backpack is a granola bar, right? Sitting on top of that mountain with the sun shining and sweat beading off your face gets even better when you bite into that satisfying snack. Yet that "healthy" bar isn't as good for you as you might think.
"Essentially, granola bars are really healthy-sounding cookies," says Ansel. An Apricot-flavored Clif Bar has 24 g of sugar; a Twinkie would've tasted better and has 4 grams less sugar.
Eat this instead: Reach for a graham cracker with some all natural peanut butter.
Either I should be eating twinkies, or should find some nice recycled cardboard to munch on instead. Wish that the food industry would be more transparent with nutrition/ingredients.
Good article. I knew most of these, but it is still interesting. The more processed it is, the more "junk" like sugar they have to add to make it taste good. I try to stick to fruits and veggies when possible.
It makes me sad that yogurt is so full of sugar. Yogurt for kids has even more sugar! I'm lactose intolerant, so I have to have coconut or soy or almond or lactose-free yogurt, and it's hard to find those varieties in plain and unsweetened.
This is why I read labels at the grocery store!! (Well, this and my gluten intolerance and my boyfriend's high blood pressure.) It takes longer, but we're healthier!
