Your fitness fix: Amp up your strength training.
"If you're in your 40s and you have a good history of training regularly, chances are you're in fantastic shape," says Trink. "Women at this age do really well with strength training -- their bodies respond beautifully." To wit: Madonna's arms once she turned 40. Squats and dead lifts that incorporate weights are Trink's weight training go-tos. Pagano says that now is the time to focus on your upper body if you're not already doing so. While both experts believe that you don't have to lift huge weights, two-pound dumbbells probably aren't going to cut it. "Women are so afraid of 'bulking up,'" says Pagano. "But if you're not lifting enough weight to build muscle, you're not getting any benefit."
I'm in my 20's and I think it's really important to vary your routine and only do things that you enjoy, then you're more likely to stick with it. Also changing up your routine confuses your body and you are less likely to get used to doing the same exercise over and over, then you hit a plateau and have to change your routine. Some days I do Zumba, walk my dog, cardio kick-boxing or a more intense strength training workout. Even if I'm super lazy I'll still fit in a short walk or yoga, once you get going you almost always want to continue. It's good to have a workout buddy, if you know someone is depending on you to show up, you're more likely to follow through. Also check your local parks and recreation. Often they have free classes. Mine offers free yoga and Zumba. They also have great hiking trails which are free, so no need to pay for a gym membership.
Eh. I'll be 30 in a month (not working like crazy and DEFINITELY not planning to get pregnant) and the only tip I found helpful was the reminder to work on my posture.
I'm still holding onto that freshmen 15 plus an extra 10 hahaha!! I should start a routine. The fast food lunch at my work desk suddenly seems less appetizing.
I like these tips! I definitely spend too much time sitting at work--I might just go set up an email reminder right now so I'll do more stretching and moving every day!
I am 37 and already in menopause so my husband just picked me up a treadmill. I walk quickly at an incline multiple times a day for 20 minutes at a time. I think this fits in with with the advice and I would definitely agree. Not matter how old you are, just get up and move and you will feel better! Thank you for another helpful article. :)
