Best Advice We Got from Mom

Our favorite beauty tips from -- yeah, we said it

Ever since we watched our mothers get ready for a night out (and snagged a bit of lipstick and eye shadow when they weren't looking), they've been sharing beauty tricks. From fighting wrinkles with a particular cream to looking gorgeous with or without makeup, we must admit we've learned a lot (see Mom, we were listening!). And even though "a lady never tells," we couldn't resist sharing our favorite gems of advice.

Protect Your Nails

"My mom's always been a bit of a tomboy, but one thing she was meticulous about was her nails. She taught me to open soda cans by using your car key as a lever underneath the tab so you don't break a nail. It's worth it." -- Cailin Honeycutt, TotalBeauty.com reader

Your Skin Shows Your Age

"The best beauty advice my mom ever gave me was ... always wear a good moisturizer. None of the women in my mother's family look their age and we are always complimented on how youthful our skin looks." -- Shannon Nelson, TotalBeauty.com reader

Cold Cream Your Mascara

"My mother told me to use straight, old-fashioned Pond's Cold Cream [$4.53] to remove my eye makeup. Just rub it on all over your lids and lashes. It looks ridiculous for a few minutes, but wipes clean away and is perfect for sensitive skin. I never have mascara on my towel after washing my face." -- Lila Merideth, TotalBeauty.com reader

Keep It Simple

"[My mom] has had the same classic hairstyle (a chin-length bob) for as long as I can remember, and I've never seen her wear enough makeup that it 'looked' like she was wearing makeup. The reward for her simplicity? She still looks as young and gorgeous as she did the day I was born. Every time we go out together, people assume she's a friend or a sister ... never that she's my mom." -- Becki Singer, TotalBeauty.com reader

Soak the Day Away

"Though it's not really a tip, my mom has always been a big bath taker and I am now too. It really is the best way to cleanse without getting your hair wet, the ideal way to shave and the most relaxing way to unwind at the end of the day. And it conserves water -- bonus!" -- Kristen Oldham Giordani,

Don't Forget Your Neck

"[My mom says] always moisturize your neck or in 20 years you'll have a droopy turkey neck!" -- Leslie Barrie, TotalBeauty.com reader

To moisturize your face and neck, try Chanel Precision Hydramax+ Active Moisture Boost Cream, $65.

Practice Good Posture

"Here's the beauty advice my mom drilled in to all of her girls: Sit up straight and smile. The way you carry yourself has more of an impact on how you look than any zit remedy or trick for applying eye shadow. Following that with a smile and direct eye contact is the clincher. I could look like three-day-old road kill, but if I'm holding myself just so, I can wear the road-kill look a little bit better." -- Colleen Rush, TotalBeauty.com reader

Less is More

"My mom always taught me that less is more when it comes to makeup -- you don't want to look like you're wearing a mask. Her exception is mascara. For that she loves to go for drama. Her favorite (and mine) is Lancome Definicils [$23.50]." -- Sarah Carrillo, Assistant Editor

Reach for the Lotion

"My mother gave me one piece of advice that I still use. Slather yourself in body lotion and face cream. She always told me that if your skin is moisturized, it will always look its very best. She is a devotee of Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion [$21.50] for day and for night, Clinique Total Turnaround Visible Skin Renewer [$34.50]." -- Ayesha Ayele Attoh, TotalBeauty.com reader

Honor Your Roots

"When my mom first showed me how to blow-dry my wavy hair straight, she taught me to flip my head over and blast my roots with the dryer before drying the rest of my hair. It adds just enough lift so that my roots don't fall flat to my head. It works even without any product." -- Kristen Oldham Giordani, Senior Editor

Pamper Your Feet

"My mom always told me to hydrate and soften my feet by massaging them with Vaseline, [$4.49] and then putting on socks to hold in the moisture. It's simple, cheap and always does the trick!" -- Tuvy Le, TotalBeauty.com reader

Embrace Inner Beauty

"For makeup, [my mom] wore very little, just Revlon's Love Pat and that iconic, blue-based pink lipstick ... Love that Pink. She taught [me] that intelligence and inner beauty give you a real glow no blush or bronzer can. When you develop your own style and are comfortable with it, you will always look great (and she always did)." -- Alison Blackman Dunham, TotalBeauty.com reader
