We Tried It: A Swanky Lip Balm Crayon You Can Buy at Costco

You can pick up makeup maven Pati Dubroff's line and a 52-pack of toilet paper at the same time

I'm not a fan of lip products. If it's gloss, it's always too gooey; if it's lipstick, I feel like a clown; if it's a stain, it always ends up on the rim of my coffee cups; if it's long-lasting color, it's a pain to get off. When it comes to my lips, the only things I stick to are Evolution of Smooth (EOS) round, colorless lip balms (mint is my flavor of the month) and Vaseline's Lip Therapy Advanced Formula , every once in a while to soften up my chapped lips.

I may hate the way most lip products feel, but I do admire a good lip color. Corals, reds, plums, nudes -- all are shades I wish I could wear, but I can never quite pull them off.

So how did I feel about a Pati Dubroff Professional Luster Lips Lip Balm Crayon landing on my desk? First thought: Ugh, a lip product. But there was something about the fat crayon tube that made it seem less intimidating for a lipstick phobe. And you can buy this line -- created by a celebrity makeup artist (Pati Dubroff has worked with Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Biel and Miley Cyrus, to name a few) -- at Costco, along with an apocalyptic stock of TP and OJ.

So, how did it do? Unlike typical lipstick, this crayon was as easy to apply as it is to stay in the lines of a coloring book. The angle of the crayon allowed me to control where and how much color went on my lips (no messy clown smile) and it blended softly. I also love that the chubby tube makes this colored lip balm almost indestructible.

The crayon allows for buildable coverage, so one swipe offers a sheer shade, and multiple coats make the color come alive. The crayon's thick shape makes it easy enough for a kindergartner to apply (which is about my skill level in the lipstick department). The only downside in my test run is that it isn't a long-wear lip stain. The color rubbed off on the rim of my daily cup of Joe and faded quickly.

The Pati Dubroff line launches at Costco in September, and the lip crayons come in a pack of five shades (Dark Orchid, Honeysuckle, Persimmon, Rosebloom and Bare Petal) for $22.
