Sofia Vergara Adds Perfumier to Her Ever-Growing Resumé -- and Business Empire

Just in time for Mother's Day comes "Sofia by Sofia Vergara"

Question: What do CoverGirl, Diet Pepsi, Comcast, Rooms to Go, State Farm and Head & Shoulders have in common?

Answer: They all dole out big bucks to buxom Columbian beauty Sofia Vergara to hawk their wares.

Vergara, 41, may be best known as "I-would-be-a-bimbo-but-I'm-too-sassy-and-opinionated-to-qualify" Gloria Pritchett on ABC's ratings juggernaut "Modern Family," but in real life she's a cunning business woman whose acumen, savvy and grit propel her to rake in $30 million a year.

"I'm not ashamed to say I love making money," the actress who chooses to build an empire rather than rest on her laurels (and fat bank account) confessed to Glam Belleza Latina magazine. "I like business, and the truth is I save way more than I spend. I invest. I plan for the future. I have a special eye for opportunities and work harder than anyone might expect. It is fun to shock people with my business ideas."

While her latest idea may not shock anyone, (it's more astonishing that she doesn't already have a fragrance) it's poised to haul in even more moola for the actress. Sofia by Sofia Vergara will launch on April 24 on HSN priced at $55 for a 100-ml. and $48 for a 50-ml. and industry sources predict that it may generate $25 million in its initial year.

But don't dismiss "Sofia" as just some perfume that they slapped the Vergara name on. Oh, heck no. As with the creation of her eponymous clothing line for K-Mart, Vergara was very hands on, and became intimately involved in formulating the concept, the fragrance and the packaging.

"One of the things that really stuck out to me when we were doing scents and bottle designs with her is that she has very strong opinions," Donald Luftus, President of Parlux, the fragrance house producing the scent told WWD. "She wants to make sure everything is very authentic and very her," said Loftus. "After that, she says, 'I will defer to the experts.' That is so rare. It really never happens. I thought that was so refreshing. She is really delightful."

When it came to picking the notes for the scent, Vergara turned to her roots. "I have orchids and roses because those are my favorite flowers, and they're Colombian," she says of the "juicy oriental floral fragrance." "I wanted to bring a little bit of who I am, my ethnicity, where I'm from, and I thought it was very cool to be able to get flowers from Colombia actually into the perfume."

You can take the girl out of Colombia but ...
