Presenting Thinx: Pretty Panties With Built-In Period Protection

Think underwear is nothing more than a rudimentary garment? Thinx again

CHANGE YOUR UNDERWEAR, CHANGE THE WORLD
CHANGE YOUR UNDERWEAR, CHANGE THE WORLD
As we all know way too well, having your period is fraught with peril; will your tampon be absorbent enough? Will your panty liner stay in place? Will you bleed through your clothing? These are but some of the many charming byproducts of menstruation and but a few of the lovely prospects we contend with every month for most of our lives.

But now, thanks to the entrepreneurially inclined Antonia Dunbar and sisters Miki and Radha Agrawal, those time-of-the-month fears can be assuaged in a snap.

Presenting Thinx, leak and stain-resistant, moisture wicking, anti-bacterial underwear that will help lay your anxieties to rest. These pretty panties are trimmed with lace and come in a variety of styles -- from thongs to full coverage shape wear. And, because Thinx can absorb 2-3 teaspoons of liquid, they're also recommended for incontinence issues. (Note: Roughly 33 percent of American women suffer from light incontinence "that can be triggered from sneezing, laughing, coughing, lifting or running.")

"If you look at some of the underwear on the incontinence market, it's really horrible," Dunbar says. (And, really, who doesn't shudder at the thought of "period undies"?). "This is something that's going to make you feel supported, make you feel beautiful."

And, buying Thinx will make you feel beautiful in another way, too. In true "women helping women" spirit, every time a pair of Thinx is sold, the company donates seven reusable menstrual pads to women in parts of the world where having "Aunt Flo" visit is a badge of dishonor.

"While traveling in Africa, I met a young girl on a weekday, and asked her 'Why aren't you in school?' She said, 'It's my week of shame,'" recalls Miki Agrawal. "Girls around the world have to miss one week of school every month because of something as natural as their periods."

This didn't sit well with the trio, so they've since partnered with the non-profit organization AFRIpads to help offer these women an alternative to the "leaves, old dirty rags and plastic bags" they've been using as feminine care products.

The three friends are looking to help better the planet, too. Because the average woman uses and disposes of 17,000 non-biodegradable tampons and pads in her lifetime, Thinx is working on developing their technology so that the panties will replace period products altogether and eliminate the effect on the environment. They're also working to develop heating pad insert pockets to help with cramps.

"Change your underwear, change the world."
