Beyoncé Covers Time's "Most Influential" Issue in a Bikini -- You Say?

Does flaunting a near naked body in a tale of remarkable achievement, success and mettle negate the point or is sex appeal merely an integral part of Bey's story?

"When was the last time a man was half naked on this cover?"

That's what a Time reader posted on Facebook about the magazine's choice to run an image of a bikini-wearing Beyoncé on the front of its annual "100 Most Influential" issue.

"You decide she's the most influential person. In the world. And then you let her grace your cover in her underwear. You don't see how pathetic that is?" said another.

There's been no shortage of opinion slinging since Time released the May 5-12 issue with the scantily clad Mrs. Jay Z gazing out at us from its black and white cover.

But for some reason, nobody seems to be mentioning Sheryl Sandberg's in depth story about the former Destiny's Child, or even giving props to the editors for having chosen their list leader wisely.

Instead, most comments relate to their choice of cover art. People are miffed that the magazine had the presence of mind to single out Beyoncé for being the powerful, significant public figure that she is and then dumb down her achievements by dressing her down.

Now, some will argue that Time went for the "glamour" shot in an attempt to sell magazines. Others will counter that Time is Time and should leave those sorts of tactics to the women's glossies and bottom-feeding tabloids .

One poster summed offered up her take on the situation: "I am a fan, but why couldn't she wear clothing like everyone else mentioned? This is supposed to be Time Magazine, a reading tool with prestige. We see enough of her crotch in videos. She has not influenced anything, but the ability to sexually express yourself to get attention. I would've been able to see if her sister, Solange was on a cover, influencing fashion and tasteful at that. [...] Come on Time, we get pimped enough by the industry. #stillafan #havemorethought."

Here's the part where I ask YOU to chime in with your two cents. A) Is Beyoncé influential enough to warrant this cover in the first place? B) Does the wardrobe choice diminish her positioning?

Please share your thoughts below. Would love to hear where you stand on this.
