Girls Can Hold Their Liquor, Guys Get Sicker?

Plus, how to sing yourself happy, and the makeup wars in Israel's parliament, how your zip code can predict your lifespan, and other health and beauty news we're talking about today

Girls get "tipsy" and guys get "wasted" -- this gender stereotyping is courtesy of a study of 139 college students at the University of Missouri. Subjects were given a typical college scenario: men and women drinking heavily. Even when the scenario made it clear that the men and women were both drinking heavily, subjects described the women as "tipsy, buzzed and light-headed," but called the men "trashed, plowed, plastered, and obliterated." The takeaway: When women are perceived as moderate drinkers (while being equally, if not more, intoxicated than their male counterparts) it opens the door for all sorts of bad judgment calls -- "She's okay to drive", "She's only 'tipsy' -- it's okay to have sex." A woman in Knesset (Israel's parliament) caused a ruckus recently for requesting a special room where female lawmakers could refresh their makeup after a long day of parliamentary activities. She has also suggested hiring an on-site makeup artist to help out with these touch-ups, and, surprise! Lawmakers (male and female) flipped. Our only question: Isn't this what we have restrooms for? A new study out of Sweden found that people who never eat fruits and vegetables die an average of three years earlier than those who get the recommended five servings a day. If you're freaking out about your lifespan right now, relax -- there's good news, too. Eating just one serving a day will buy you an extra 19 months. (Sadly, you don't get bonus years for going over five.) (Source)

Want to know how long you'll live? Look at your zip code. The Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation released stats showing the average life expectancies in the U.S. based on zip code. The top counties for women: New York City, Loudoun, Va., and Kings, N.Y. The worst: Fayette, Ala., Harmon, Okla., and Beckham, Okla. The researchers say the stats confirm that lifestyle factors (hello, diet and exercise) have more of an impact on your overall health and lifespan than other factors, like pollution. Source

You now have a reason to make your friends sing karaoke with you. A study from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden found that singing in a group causes your heart to synchronize with those of your group mates, causing a calming effect that's as good for your health as a yoga session. Source
