It happened one (not so special) Sunday. I was perusing the beauty counter at Bloomingdale's for a beauty product I most likely didn't need, but one that might fill some unknown emotional void … c'mon, you know you do it too. While I typically like to be left alone and avoid eye contact with the often over zealous salespeople, I was feeling particularly chipper and decided to engage with a smiling woman cloaked in black. Besides, I've read the Nice Girls Guide to Pushy Salespeople and have finally learned it's OK to say "no thank you" when offered a spray of something that smells like my great aunt Ingrid.

Anyway, I accepted a spritz of Nanette Lepore Eau de Parfum Spray, $68 from "Debbie" on my wrist. At first whiff, I was slightly intrigued. By the time I had reached the shoe department, I had decided that it was hands down the most beautiful smell I had ever inhaled. Then I decided I could not LIVE another day on this planet NOT smelling like it. A 2.5 ounce bottle of perfume had officially changed my life. Which got me to thinking, which other beauty products have life-altering capabilities?

I, of course, went to some of the most famous names in the beauty industry to find out which beauty products changed their lives … and they spilled! Here's what they said:

Kate Somerville

Product: L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara, $7.29

Why she loves it: "Growing up I loved using L'Oreal makeup. I especially remember using Indian Earth bronzer/blush that came in a clay pot with a cork," she says. Her love affair continues with this mascara: "I haven’t found anything that works so well and makes my lashes look so full and long."

Tracey Cunningham
