Fashion Week's Hottest Accessory Is Battery-Powered

And it's kinda creepy

Forget about "it" bags and new color palettes -- wannabe fashion cognoscenti are lusting after Nina Garcia's eyewear for the upcoming New York Fashion Week 2013 shows. The Marie Claire creative director and Project Runway judge will be covering fashion week wearing Google Glasses.

If you've been too busy with frivolous business like solving world hunger or raising kids and you haven't heard of this thing we call the Google Glass, here's the gist: it's a pair of glasses fitted with a small prism that sits in front of the wearer's eye. The prism records everything you see, on the spot, as a photograph or video. It's a voyeur's dream come true, and we're a little creeped out by the possibilities ... except in this particular application of the technology. (Glass can also respond to voice commands, display GPS, and do a bunch of other things we would rather use our smartphones for.)

Garcia isn't the first to bring Google Glass to Fashion week (Diane Von Furstenberg and her models sported pairs on the runway last year), but she is the first to record live coverage of the week's events. This is excellent news for those of us who would rather watch the spectacle from the comforts of home, with our fuzzy slippers and PJS on -- versus dressing to the hilt and vying with other desperate fashionistas for 15 seconds of street style paparazzi fame.

Fashion fiends can follow Garcia's Instagram, Twitter and Vine accounts for front row views, behind the scenes coverage and star-studded events with the hashtag #BeNina. "I am fascinated on how technology allows us to see fashion through a different lens," she said on MarieClaire.com, which will also run Garcia's footage throughout the week. "You cannot get closer to fashion than this fashion week. You will be seated first row with me!"

Garcia's only criticism of Le Glass? "The battery time only lasts for one or two hours so you have to reboot. You know fashion week is never a one- or two-hour day -- it's more like 12 hours." Ahhh, what a rough life.
