Cinnamon twisty braid
Why we like it: Does this hairstyle not look pastry-esque? Do we even have to explain why we like it? It's simply amazing. Rachel Cooper from Red PR saw the zigzag braided hairstyle the day before at the Behnaz Sarafpour show and just had to copy it.

Tip: Basically you create a French braid that zigzags down the back of your head. How? Start the French braid on one side of your head (above your ear), then braid towards the back of the other ear. Then switch directions again, braiding to the other side of your head until you reach the nape of your neck. Braid hair all the way down, secure with an elastic and then tuck the tail of your braid up and secure it to the base of your style with bobby pins.

Off-center Topsy Tail pony
Why we like it: Lexie Lazear, MAC makeup artist, brings the Topsy Tail back in a cooler incarnation.

Tip: Along with your Dr. Martens, add the Topsy Tail to your list of items you should have saved from the '90s. But don't fret if you don't have that loop-y device anymore -- just create a loose side pony, split the hair above the elastic and flip the tail of your pony though that slit and pull. Finish the hairstyle off with a headband.

Classic red lip
Why we like it: There's just something so striking and elegant about Reese Pereira from fashionstylebeauty.com's classic, red lip. If you need a chic look and have only minutes to spare, it's the way to go.

Tip: Use Stila Long Wear Liquid Lip Color in Firey, $22 to recreate Pereira's look.

Twisted bun
Why we like it: Aside from the fact that this is a fresh twist on a basic bun, we also love the shimmery highlights seen on Marla Weiss from Tresemme.

Try: Next time you feel like wearing a bun, follow these steps:

Step 1: Create a side part.

Step 2: Twist the front section of your hair (on either side of your part) toward the back of your head, securing it with bobby pins when you reach the back.

Step 3: Secure all of your hair into a ponytail in the area where the bobby pins are. Twist hair into a bun and secure with additional pins.

Step 4: Use a finishing spray to keep your style in place.

With the explosion of reality TV and the popularity of gossip sites and magazines exploiting "stars" like Kate Gosselin or Kim Kardashian, we all have an undeniable fascination with real people. So this year at New York Fashion Week, we thought that instead of showing off beauty trends seen on models, we'd share our favorite hair and makeup looks seen on real women.

See the best hair and makeup looks seen on real women at fashion week now.

After all, real women either inspire or get inspired by fashion and beauty trends that models display on the runway or on the pages of a magazine -- and we're the ones that have to make them work. Since trends seen on models or celebrities seem somehow less attainable, it was refreshing at New York Fashion Week to see everyone from makeup artists to public relations professionals to photographers recreating looks they had seen at a fashion show the day prior, or stepping up their usual hair and makeup routine in the spirit of the fashionable week.

As we approached these real women, some were slightly frightened when we pointed our cameras their way, some flattered, some confused, some annoyed, but after the initial awkwardness of approaching them passed, we think most of them felt pretty flattered. The makeup looks you're about to see range from a perfectly executed red lip to avant-garde eye makeup, and the hairstyles you'll find span from zig zag braids to dreamy waves. To top it all off, we also share real woman sporting of-the-moment nail colors and formulas. If nothing else, we hope these photos will provoke you to try a new hairdo or lip color, and we offer up steps, tips and product suggestions to help you recreate these looks.
