We Tried It: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day

Rolling your eyes at the promises of perfection? We found out if the product lives up to its hefty claims
I like to think I'm immune to clever marketing ploys, but I have to admit: this product had me at "hello, my name is Perfect Hair Day." Perfect Hair Day? Yes, please. I had to try it immediately.

The fact that it's by Living Proof -- the brand developed by MIT scientists and co-owned by Jennifer Aniston -- may have also played a part. However, I've used Living Proof products in the past, and they worked too well. (I know that sounds Crazy Eyes crazy, but hear me out.) The straightening shampoo made my hair look flat-ironed -- even if I piled on texturizing sprays and used a curling iron. The Full Thickening Mousse, $15, gave me, oh, about twice as much hair, and I felt like I was wearing Oprah's 3.5-pound Afro wig.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day, $24, dubbed PHD for short, is the first product in which Living Proof was able to combine their two patented molecules (see, science can be fun, girls!) -- the frizz-fighting and the volumizing -- while also treating and protecting hair. They call it a 5-in-1 product for smoothness, volume, hydration, strength, and shine. But can you have too much of a good thing? I took the risk to find out.

I rubbed a pea-sized amount (even less than the recommended nickel size -- I didn't want to overdo it) between my palms and combed it through my hair. Then, I dried it as I usually do: with a round brush to smooth the sections around my face, rough drying the rest. My hair is fine but naturally curly, so after blow-drying it, I wrap big sections around a curling wand to create waves.

Somehow, miraculously, the PHD cut my already-fast 10-minute drying time down to eight minutes. Two minutes might not seem like much of an improvement, but we're talking 20 percent less frying time. And the rough-dried sections, which tend to look dull and frizzy before I curl them, were shiny and smooth without being flat. I did my usual curling wand routine and skipped the shine spray and hairspray to really put the PHD to the test.

In place of my usual semi-frizzy but passable waves, my waves looked bouncy and shiny -- just like a professional blowout. It really was a perfect hair day -- but not too perfect. It was just the amount of perfect I'd hoped for.
