For anyone, finding the perfect foundation shade is about as easy as following a rainbow to its end. Add freckles to the mix and, well, you might as well be looking for a leprechaun and pot of gold, too. You're faced with issues like whether you should match your foundation to your freckles, to the rest of your face or to some shade halfway between the two. Then, there's the question of coverage: Should you completely cover them? If you don't want to conceal them, will your freckles look strangely muted? The list of questions goes on and on, making it easy to give up on makeup altogether. So we turned to Katie Jane Hughes, makeup artist and Global Colour Ambassador for Butter London, and Los Angeles-based celebrity makeup artist Taylor Babaian to answer all our questions about applying makeup to freckled skin.
If Mercedes Benz Fashion Week conjures up iconic New York scenes, fashion editors wrapped in the craziest coats you've ever laid eyes on, and of course, Bill Cunningham, you're a woman after our own hearts. But while we're anxiously awaiting New York Fashion Week for a couple more months, we decided to turn our attention to the south. Miami, that is. Miami Swim Week is almost a complete 180 from the other Mercedes Benz Fashion Weeks. The shows take place late at night in an almost party atmosphere, and the bikinis can be so skimpy it makes us blush. As always, our favorite part of any fashion week are the beauty looks. Here, our favorite hair and makeup looks from the hottest city around.
When it comes to mascara, will women ever have it all? You know what we mean: a mascara formula that darkens, separates, plumps and stays put all day -- so you don't have to worry about flaking or smudging while you're out and about re: conquering the world and such.
The most important anniversary is finally here (no offense to your husband or boyfriend): Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale runs nationwide online and in stores today through August 3rd. As if early access and discounts on your favorite designer fall clothing, shoes and handbags weren't enough, they're also offering crazy good beauty deals … like more than 50 percent off in some cases.
We see a lot of makeup brands and new products come through our office. But no matter how often we test out makeup collections, a new product from Nars never gets a blasé reaction. The same can be said for the collection's new shades for fall 2014. Nars' fall 2014 collection, Night Caller, boasts eyeliners flecked with gold, glistening eye shadow combos and the prettiest cranberry lip stain I've ever set eyes on. And that's just the makeup.
Mermaids are portrayed as beautiful, siren-like creatures with gorgeous, long locks; glowing skin and perfect makeup that never runs. But in real life, we know Ariel's fire-engine red hair wouldn't stand a chance against the sun and water. Skin without SPF would burn and blister (not to mention, leave some serious clamshell tan lines), and we'd hate to think of the prune-like state our fingers and toes would be in after a lifetime submerged. What's a mermaid to do? We asked the closest thing to it, members of the Aqualillies, a professional synchronized swimming troupe, who can spend a whole day in the water, and still look gorgeous. Here, their best summer hair, makeup and skin care secrets against which chlorine, sun and surf don't stand a chance.
No matter what time I wake up in the morning, I'm running late. Maybe it's because I insist on scrambling eggs every morning, or am trying to fit in a few phone calls before I head out the door that I always run out of time to do my makeup. Fast-forward to me digging through my makeup bag and applying eyeliner on the sidewalk, lipstick in my car (at stoplights!) and bronzer in the office elevator. Over the years, I've come to learn that some beauty products are just not meant for commuting. Enter these on-the-go beauty products that are nothing short of genius. These products come in convenient toss-in-your-bag sizes, no-mess packaging and compact formulas that are so fool-proof you could apply them without a mirror if you had to (though we don't recommend it). Pick up a few and keep hitting snooze, or stash your favorites in your desk to go straight to happy hour.
They balk at eyeliner and tear up at the sight of eye shadow. And don't even think about going near them with mascara. If you've got sensitive eyes, chances are you have a love/hate relationship with your eye makeup. Sure, that cult-classic mascara may get you bold, beautiful lashes, but if it's causing your eyes to flip out, it just isn't worth it. So we enlisted the help of New York-based optometrist Dr. Dori Wolf, who sees patients with swollen, red, itchy and flaky eyes on the daily (she estimates that around 35 percent of her patients have these symptoms), She spilled her tips on the makeup that won't send your eyes into a tizzy. But before we even get into the cosmetic side of things, her first recommendation: Pop a daily omega-3 fatty acid supplement (otherwise known as fish oil). It reduces inflammation in the body and, in turn, help keep eyes moistened and comfy.
Maybe you're a total makeup novice who thinks tightlining is the name of a circus act. Or maybe you're so advanced you can draw a cat eye in your rearview mirror on a bumpy road. (Don't judge me, you've tried it, too.) Fact is, we all have some things to learn about makeup application, especially when it comes to the eyes. These Asian eye makeup tutorials walk you through how to create a variety of looks and how to complement your unique lid shape, lashes, and eye and skin color.
This year's Fashion Week trends aren't for the faint of heart. Bold orange lips, vivid cobalt eyeliner ... even purple (yes, purple) lipstick has been leaving impressions both on the runway and off. The only problem -- what does one wear with these brighter-than-bright makeup trends to avoid looking like a circus clown? We spoke with some kings and queens of color in the industry -- Wende Zomnir, Executive Creative Director at Urban Decay, Luke Reichle, celebrity stylist and costume designer, and fashion stylist Kimberlee Tokarz -- for their expert advice in pulling off color, lots of color.
Whether it's an overnight bag or the moving box marked "kitchen utensils," my over-packing problem is one that no amount of duct tape (or therapy) can fix. This everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mentality overflows into my beauty habits as well. It doesn't matter if I'm going for a natural, no-makeup, makeup look or full glam; my handbag still ends up crammed full of just about every product I own. To ward off the early stages of Poshitis (also known as heavy handbag syndrome), I took my problem to the experts to find out how to touch up my look on the go without getting weighed down.
Dove's unprecedented Campaign for Real Beauty celebrates bodies of all shapes, sizes, colors, and ages. It employs plus-size models, women of different races and those with wrinkles and sun spots to inspire us real women to feel more comfortable in our own skin -- so to speak. Dove continually creates memorable, groundbreaking (and at times controversial) ads and commercials; they make pro-age beauty products instead of anti-aging ones; and now, with their "Movement for Self-Esteem", they're trying to reach a younger generation by helping instill confidence in adolescent girls. However, 13- to 93-year-old women can resonate with this poignant slogan for the movement: "Imagine a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety."
There's nothing quite like the feeling of purchasing a new beauty product. In part, it's a gamble. (Will this lipstick shade work with your skin color?) It's also a way to improve or even redefine yourself. (New highlights will show your ex that you're a mysterious lady he never had a handle on anyway.) It's a thrill that never really gets old.
Okay, I'll admit it -- I have a major girl crush on Kelly Osbourne. Anyone who can dye their hair purple, shave half their head and do it all without the look-at-me fanfare of other celebrities is pretty badass in my book. So when I heard she was coming out with a limited edition makeup collection for M.A.C., I instantly set out snooping for pre-released images and info. Oh, and did I mention her equally sassy counterpart, mother Sharon Osbourne, has also come out with a summer makeup collection for M.A.C.? The two collections, which feature reinvented pastel shades and glammed up classic colors respectively, are available online June 2 and in stores June 12.
Beauty bloggers make a living showing us new and gorgeous ways to apply makeup and style hair. They produce a goldmine of makeup tutorials and beauty how-tos that teach and inspire. (Because, let's be honest, can you ever recreate that perfect smoky eye or flawless face after a stint in the makeup chair at Sephora?) So what happens when a beauty blogger takes it all off? Every last bit of makeup ... gone. And not the Saturday morning, just rolled out of bed "no makeup" makeup look. We're talking washed clean, photographed and posted -- for the whole world to see.
Every spring, the fashion world anxiously awaits the kickoff fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's fashion exhibit. It's notoriously a red carpet where Hollywood and society A-listers take some risks, and the 2014 Met Gala was no exception.
