Mushrooms aren't just for our dinner plate anymore! From shiitake to reishi to truffles, mushrooms are being used in skin care products for their many benefits. Thanks to extensive conducted and coming research, these fungi, along with some medicinal varieties, bring nothing but bright results, due to their potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We reached out to House of Gro founders to find out more about what it is that makes mushrooms a hero skincare ingredient.

"In terms of skincare benefits, mushrooms are unique because they contain various bioactive compounds that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties. For example, mushrooms contain beta-glucans, which can help to improve skin hydration and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles." —explains House of Gro's Irina Gottesman.

"Chaga has tons of betulinic acid which is necessary for the regeneration of skin, and healing of wounds and offers anti-inflammatory properties. Chaga mushrooms include enzymes that do an amazing job of keeping skin moist while minimizing clogging and dirt build-up which is notorious for the onset of acne!" —Irina adds. Chaga also happens to contain the highest levels of ergothioneine, an amino acid with significant skincare and health benefits. Sensitive and reactive skin could benefit a great deal from an introduction to mushroom skincare products, but because mushrooms are kind to the skin's microbiome and, depending on the variety, provide potent targeted care, everybody stands to win by giving 'shrooms a chance.
