What Makes Satin Different?
The Satin hair color formula contains less than 1 percent ammonia, making it gentler on hair than traditional hair dyes. For further hair-nourishing goodness, Satin is plant-based and relies on aloe vera to treat your hair gently as you color it. Reviewers note that their hair feels soft and healthy after using Satin.

With Satin, the dye and the developer are sold separately. That way, you can choose the shade you want and also customize your developer selection to your needs.

There are 72 shades of Satin hair color. Reviewers note that many of the available colors are very natural-looking. You may be able to find a tone that exactly matches your desired shade. If not, mixing two colors works well.

The silicone-based developer comes in six varieties. Pick the one that corresponds to your hair-dyeing plans. For example, 10 Volume is for going darker or keeping your color close to the same. 40 Volume is for going four levels lighter. Cover Grey works to penetrate gray hair. There's also Semi for a color that lasts just four to six weeks.

How Is Satin Used?
Although Satin can be applied professionally in a salon, it also works for home use.

Twenty-four hours before coloring your hair, try the product out on a small patch of skin to test for allergic reactions. You should also test the dye and developer out on multiple strands of hair that have been removed from your head to analyze whether they will hold up to the dyeing process.

Once you're confident about how your skin and hair will react to Satin, it's time to start the dye process. Mix one part color to two parts developer in a non-metal container. Apply the mixture first near the nape of the neck and other spots where hair is darkest. Then, move on to the rest of the hair except the roots.

After the formula has been on your hair for 20 minutes, you can apply color to the roots. Leave the dye in place for another 20 to 25 minutes.

Use lukewarm water to rinse your hair. Then, finish with a shampoo. Do not use Satin dye over hair that has been treated with metallic dyes.

Where Is Satin Sold?
Satin hair color is sold primarily in beauty supply stores around the country. You may also be able to find it at your local salon. If you can't find Satin locally, try shopping for it online, which is how many fans get theirs.
