6 Ways to Soothe Irritated Skin

Calm your irritated, red, or itchy skin with these natural ingredients

Irritated skin has many causes from dryness and allergies to abrasive cosmetic products. Inflamed skin turns red because blood cells flood the area with oxygen and nutrients to repair damage. While your body may be working to soothe the skin on its own, there are a few ways you can speed up the process to get your smooth, normal-looking skin back.

Hydrocortisone Cream
If you have dry, red, irritated skin, apply a soothing moisturizer and then a small dot of hydrocortisone cream in a 1% solution. The cream will reduce inflammation and constrict blood vessels which should ease redness. Be careful not to use hydrocortisone cream for more than two weeks; if the redness persists, see a dermatologist.

Cold Milk
If you touch something you're allergic to, such as certain chemicals in cosmetics and metallic jewelry, your skin might react with a red rash or blister. Soak a small towel in cold milk and apply the compress to the irritated skin for about 10 minutes. Taking antihistamine medication should help with the irritation caused by the allergen. If you don't know what ingredient caused the allergic reaction, discontinue use of that product and switch to a hypoallergenic product which should be free of most irritants like parabens and fragrances.

Ceramide Moisturizer
Dermatologists recommend using moisturizers that contain ceramides, a compound that helps prevent dry skin. If you regularly struggle with red, itchy, or dry skin, use a moisturizer as part of your beauty routine. You may not see results overnight, but using a ceramide-containing moisturizer will help your skin form a barrier against dryness over time. One indication of a good moisturizer is that it's formulated with natural ingredients such as plant extracts.

Gentle Cleanser
Your beauty routine might be causing damage without you knowing it. Dandruff on your scalp as well as dry, red patches on your face can be caused by cleansing products that have harsh ingredients. Choose a hypoallergenic product for sensitive skin, such as Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar, $5, when cleansing your face. Look for hair products without parabens or sulfates and anti-acne products that don't use harsh acid ingredients.

Chamomile
Chamomile is a naturally soothing remedy for irritated skin. You can use a product made with chamomile extract or go with a DIY option. Briefly soak a chamomile tea bag in cool water and apply the bag to red, dry skin. You can also apply a compress by soaking a small towel in cool chamomile tea.

Lukewarm Water
Showering in hot water may be drying out the skin on your face and body. When your skin is exposed to hot water for long periods of time, it can be stripped of its natural moisturizing oils. Showering in lukewarm water will help your skin retain moisture naturally. Use a hydrating body wash like Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash, $8.
