9 Weird Facts About Body Hair

Almost your entire body is covered with hair that can do strange and wonderful things

Removal of body hair is a growing industry that rakes in over $2 billion a year. Even men are getting in on the action at increasing rates. However, the hair that grows on your body serves many important functions. The following facts may make you reconsider removing your body fur.

Hairy Babies
Some new parents may be alarmed by their newborn's wealth of body hair. These fine hairs, called lanugo, often give babies a fuzzy look. There's no need to worry. This hair serves to keep the baby warm in-utero and will fall out after birth, usually within a couple weeks. Sometimes, lanugo hair grows back. This may be a sign of a hormone imbalance or anorexia.

Dude, You Have Pubes on Your Face
Adults usually have two types of hair on their body: terminal and vellus. Terminal hair is thick and dark while vellus hair is very thin and light. Pubic hair and men's facial hair are both terminal hair types. By the way, body hair can go gray just like head hair, although it usually takes longer.

Sex Appeal
Apocrine sweat glands are located next to the hair follicles. These glands produce a thick, oily secretion which leads to body odor. Some of these scents may serve to attract sexual partners similar to the way pheromones act in other animals.

Muscular Hair
Vellus hair, that thin, downy hair on your arms and other places, actually has muscles called arrector pili. You can see these tiny muscles in action when you get "goose-flesh," and your hair stands on end.

Can't Stand the Heat
Vellus hair also helps control body temperature. When it's cold, body hair helps insulate the body, so that's another reason for ladies to stop shaving their legs in winter. When it's hot, this same hair helps cool the body by whisking away sweat.

Shaving May Encourage Infection
Surgeons have found that shaving hair on the body prior to surgery actually increased the risk of infection. Removing pubic hair can have a similar effect. It may be in part because shaving leaves microscopic cuts on the skin where bacteria and viruses, such as herpes, can enter.

Eyelash Mites
About half of the population has tiny eyelash mites called Demodex. While these mites are usually harmless, they can occasionally cause eye irritation.

You're Losing It
The average adult sheds around 150 body hairs a day compared to 25-100 head hairs daily.
