If you're looking for your signature lipstick color -- you know, the one that strangers stop you on the street to ask about -- you must take a trip to a Bite Beauty Lip Lab. The Lip Lab is a mini factory where visitors customize their own tubes of Bite Beauty's famous food-grade lipsticks, which are made with 12 natural, lip-pleasing oils. Here's what it's like to design your own shade at the Bite Beauty Lip Lab.

The Lab
Picture this: You step through the door of the Bite Beauty Lip Lab, and shelves lined with delicious-looking color pigment instantly catch your eye. You're ushered to a mixing station that's fully stocked with little pots of lip color, each made from the same quality ingredients as the tubes of lipstick that Bite Beauty handcrafts in its Toronto factory. Your personal attendant uses a flat spatula to scoop out portions of this luscious pigment and expertly blends them together on a lighted palette.

The attendant hands you an applicator so that you can try on this mix. If it's perfect, great! If not, the two of you will adjust it until you get it just right.

The Formulation
Once you settle on your ideal two shades, the attendant will work magic to turn them into tubes of lipstick. First, you get to decide what scents you want to have added to your lipsticks. Choices include vanilla, cherry and mint. You can also select the lipstick finish, such as matte or glossy.

Then, the attendant portions out the right amount of various pigments, heats them together and spins the liquefied colors in a centrifuge until they are perfectly mixed. The attendant pours each mixture into a tube-shaped mold, and after briefly placing the molds in the freezer, he or she transfers the now-solid bullets into tubes for you to take home.

You get to name your colors, and the exact formula for each will be recorded for the purpose of future reorders.

The Options
The custom color process described above is officially known as the Bespoke Lipstick experience. You receive two custom shades plus lip care products for $150.

Bite Beauty Lip Lab also offers a lower-priced Custom Lipstick experience. The colors are premixed, but you customize your selections by choosing the scent and the finish. This option is $55 for one color or $80 for two.

The Locations
Bite Beauty Lip Labs are found in four cities: New York City, San Francisco, San Jose and Toronto. Bite Beauty's official line is that the shops take walk-ins when possible, but they are insanely popular, so their schedules fill quickly. Therefore, reservations are the best way to get your hands on your totally unique lip colors with as little stress as possible.

Once it's your turn for an appointment, the process goes quickly. You'll be in and out in under an hour, and the whole thing can even be as quick as 15 minutes.
