7 Liposuction Myths & Facts

What to expect when you're considering cosmetic surgery

1. (Almost) Anywhere, Anyone -- Do you have any area from head to toe that you wish were just a tad more svelte or better defined? Incredibly, virtually anywhere there's body fat, liposuction offers a near instant, precise solution for most adults in good health. Fat cells do not grow back once removed. Want to know more? 2. Non-surgical Liposuction is not Liposuction -- liposuction involves an incision, typically small, so fat can be removed. Nonsurgical liposuction does not require an incision, generally involves some form of externally applied heat or ultrasound, and fat is slowly expunged from your body in not as precisely nor in as large quantities as surgical liposuction.

3. Instant six pack abs & breast reductions are possible with liposuction -- But it's important to manage your expectations. The less fat you have, the more likely you will achieve sculpted, six pack abs than patients with higher body fat (despite having more fat removed). A limited amount of fat can be removed from breasts before breast symmetry becomes an issue. Click here to find out if you're a good candidate for liposuction.

4. The tools of the trade: lasers and ultrasound -- Got time or money? Both laser and ultrasound assisted liposuction generally provide better results not necessarily due to the technology, but rather, these newer technologies generally require surgeons to take more time and care as they wait for the fat to be loosened. Best results remain in the hands of the surgeon's skills; a Michaelangelo-like surgeon may create better artwork with crayons than a lesser surgeon-artist with the most advanced tools.

5. It's not magic, but liposuction uses "magic wands" -- also known as the cannula, these hollow, cylindrical wands vary greatly in terms of shaft length and diameter. The smallest diameter cannulas can precisely shape delicate, difficult to reach facial areas leaving virtually no visible scars and requiring no stitches. Larger diameter cannulas requiring stitches are used for larger amounts of fat removal in areas such as the abdomen, buttocks and thighs. Learn more about liposuction.

6. Girdles are back -- compression garments generally must be worn 24/7 for several weeks whenever large amounts of fat are removed. Compression garments squeeze your remaining tissues together so you'll heal more smoothly, with less undesirable lumping. This is something to consider if the weather is warm or if you plan to wear more revealing clothing.

7. Drips and drains -- special fluid is injected during liposuction to serve two purposes: to further anesthetize the area and to carry dislodged fat away. Anytime a large amount of fluid is injected, some fluids will remain until it completely drains over 24-72 hours.
