9 Eyeliners You Should Avoid

These products made readers march to the return counter

According to your reviews, these eyeliners -- some of which had potential to be great -- possessed at least one fatal flaw that was undetectable at the store. Read on to find out which product harbored your biggest pet peeve. (Spot one of your favorites? Write a counter review to boost its rating!) No. 9:
Stila Kajal Eye Liner, $16.50

Average rating: 5*
Grand Offense: Too weak. "It is definitely not the liner for oily skin or warm weather. It smudges all over the place. I wish it had better staying power." -- cheapthrills "The liner is very soft and malleable so the tip of the pencil is prone to breaking. (You can lose a lot of product this way!)" -- janedoe

No. 8:
Revlon Bedroom Eyes Powder Liner, $9.95

Average rating: 4*
Grand Offense: Messy packaging. "I really dislike this container/application bottle. You pull out the wand and the stuff goes everywhere ... then the wand has a really blunt foam applicator that creates serious fall-out upon application. The actual kohl powder is really lovely. I just wish it wasn't in this type of bottle." -- venus_nouveau

No. 7:
LORAC Front Of The Line Waterproof Eyeliner, $20

Average rating: 4*
Grand offense: Dry tip. "The color dries out very quickly, and at certain angles doesn't work at all!" -- lak987

"It is difficult to get the product on. If you can get it to flow from the tube to the felt tip, it still skips and dries out. I bought two and returned them both." -- soonbslim

No. 6:
L'Oreal Paris Micro Liner Ultra Fine Lining Pencil, $8.49

Average rating: 4*
Grand offense: No staying power. "It goes on well, but doesn't stay on. I always end up with eyeliner gunked up at the corner of my eyelids and underneath. It's a constant look in the mirror and wipe under the eyes!" -- Jessica_Long

No. 5:
CARGO Eye Pencil, $14

Average rating: 4*
Grand offense: Fleeting. "I was disappointed ... it fades quickly and smudges when touched. There are much better eyeliners out there and I would not recommend this product to a friend." -- Elisemarie

No. 4:
Guerlain 'Divinora' Eye Liner, $32

Average rating: 3*
Grand offense: Iffy quality. "So expensive and so disappointing. Difficult application: Dries too fast and the texture is too thick. The brush is not refined enough." -- GoyaLL

"I was very disappointed that my eyes would turn red every time I used this. I have used liquid eyeliners of all brands but never had this effect before." -- HannaNYC

No. 3:
Physicians Formula Eye Definer Automatic Eye Pencil, $5.50

Average rating: 2*
Grand offense: Smudges. "While this eye liner goes on well, it tends to be a tad heavy and smudges. The color was good, but I needed to set it with powder or it would smudge, even with the lightest application." -- Sherryjbry

No. 2:
Lola Liquid Eyeliner, $20

Average rating: 2*
Grand offense: Flaky. "I use liquid liner every day and I have tried a lot of brands, but this one is the worst. As soon as it dried, it started to flake off in big chunks. Don't waste your money." -- cosmo12181

No. 1:
Jane Endless Eye Liquid Eye Liner, $3.49

Average rating: 1*
Grand offense: Not sweatproof. "It says it lasts up to 16 hours. I had it on for a half an hour and as soon as I broke a small sweat, it was all under my eyes. I didn't line the bottom but it ended it up there." -- stephlewski

The Stila Kajal is actually one of my favorites! I have it in topaz (a peachy nude color) and wear it on my waterline quite a bit to open up my eyes and I love it! It probably wouldn't be that good for your upper lash line though so I can see how they might rate it negatively, but I love mine!

Just a quick thanks to everyone who takes their time to review! This is Very informative! After losing a lot of money buying things that are total junk (cars, electronics, etc. I buy cosmetics from places with generous return policies, however I'd rather not waste my time with returns), I rely heavily on reviews for purchases. Since I now rely on reviews a lot I'm trying to make the effort to write reviews as well
