Every year, seasonal gear seems to hit stores earlier and earlier. Try to buy a bikini now and you'll get sale racks of mismatched tops and bottoms, plus the tweed skirts and leather jackets everyone will be wearing in … September.
We needed this today: a little reminder that underneath all of the pro makeup and hours of coiffing, even the most fabulous celebs look like they woke up on the wrong side of the bed -- wrinkles, puffy, dark eye circles, pimples, bed head and all.
Would you sell your soul for a one-of-a-kind designer fragrance? Do you secretly covet your neighbor's skin? If your favorite lipstick color were discontinued, how big of a hissy fit would you pitch? Just because we preach the virtues of wearing sunscreen daily or praise the almighty lip balm doesn't mean we walk the righteous path with all of our beauty obsessions. Some of our sinful beauty mistakes border on the criminal.
Body paint enthusiasts made their way to Austria to compete in the 16th annual World Bodypainting Festival, where they showed off some of the most incredible art in the flesh we've ever seen. Models posed wearing nothing but makeup and gallons of paint and glitter -- who knew you could do so much with makeup? Check out some of our favorite from this year's festival.
In the Total Beauty and Beauty Riot office, most of us don't have makeup bags so much as makeup trunks, and even those are often overflowing with products.
Sure, summer is just getting into full swing, but we're already hearing whispers about the new makeup trends for Fall 2013. It's bold (brows), it's bright (skin), it's retro (dig out those Doc Martens), and it's what we'll be wearing come September when things start cooling off.
It's hard not to be enamored with all things French. There's the baguette, a little slice of heaven that make sandwiches seem so elegant. There are the twee, rainbow-colored macarons (which always remind us of the gorgeous excesses of the Original Diva, Marie Antoinette). Even the croissant, which we know is a butter bomb, blows our humble toast out of the water. Don't even get me started on crepes, Champagne, frites and French kissing. What a culture!
When the temperatures start to rise, that's your cue to refresh your makeup bag and fill it with plenty of bright and bold hues. Summer is a veritable celebration of color, and what's the easiest way to inject a pop of color into your beauty routine? Start with your lipstick.
Matte is back in NARS' new Fall 2013 line, which includes eyeshadows, eyeliners, lipsticks, and nail polishes. We love the intense, midnight-toned hues of the shadows -- they remind us of the rich colors you see in the night sky hours after sun goes down. You can grab the new looks at NARS online starting July 15.
The BET Awards season is always an exciting time of year. The sold-out concerts, the star-studded movie premieres, the celebrity comedy acts -- it's more than just an awards show weekend ... it's a full-blown experience.
Some of my favorite things about festival season -- besides being able to wear crazy prints, trendy crop tops, boho headbands ... and not look insane -- is keeping my makeup to a minimum. Warm weather and full-blown makeup just doesn't mix. Sweaty, drippy, streak-ridden foundation is never sexy and a hairstyle that requires constant fixing (while you're still dripping sweat) is never a good look. That's why creating a happy balance between what's essential and what's excessive is key.
Weekends to us mean leisurely brunches, hiking with friends, and, OK, catching up on errands too. What they don't mean: spending hours in front of the mirror perfecting a cat eye before heading to the coffee shop or grocery store.
It's summer -- primetime for swimming and sweating. If you're like us, it also means your eyeliner takes a hike on your face, dripping and smudging in places it was never intended to wander. So, you look for a waterproof eyeliner. But here's the thing about finding the perfect one: the only way to find out if it actually works is to buy it and try it. And if it doesn't? Sorry, sucker. Add it to the pile of other products with broken promises.
Over the last five or so years, mascara wands have morphed from simple to seriously kooky. First, there was an onslaught of rubber, spiky brushes (like CoverGirl Lashblast Volume Mascara). Then, vibrating wands had their five minutes of fame (see: Lancome Oscillation Mascara). And who can forget the terrifying Givenchy Phenomen' Eyes, which looked a bit like a Medieval torture device?
MAC surprised us today with an early online launch of the new Tropical Taboo Collection -- a sizzling lineup that's a thousand times hotter than "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights." The vivid, shimmering color collection, on sale today online and in stores June 27, brings the heat, with an emphasis on glamorous eye shadows, bold lip colors, and super-shiny lip glosses. Kudos to the team for the up-tempo names, like "Cha-Cha-Cha" and "Calypso Beat" -- they kinda take us to a Latin boogie happy place.
As a sunshine devotee, summer solstice is one of my favorite days of the year. Sadly, most of us don't engage in any ancient midsummer rituals anymore (drinking beers at your neighbor's bonfire doesn't count). So we're in favor of instituting a bit of a summer beauty ritual to celebrate our planet's closest tilt towards the sun. Get your fill of light with these summer makeup looks that are causing a blaze on Pinterest. Perhaps your bright looks will even ward off the evil spirits that start to return with the sun's southward turn (evil spirits in this case would mean blocked pores, wrinkles, or melted makeup).
We've been talking about Marc Jacobs Beauty -- the nail polishes in particular -- since New York Fashion Week in February. But it's all been very hush-hush -- an Instagram picture here, a website teaser there. That is, until today's WWD reveal.
Target has launched a new tutorial video with some great, easy-to-follow tips for a gorgeous smoky eye. The brand tapped makeup artist and founder of the Pixi makeup line, Petra Strand, to show her best advice to create a smoky eye using Pixi Lid & Line in Smoky Olive, $18. This three-in-one pencil has a liner, shadow, and smudger, so you can pull off the day-to-night look with one simple product. In the video, Strand shows how to elongate the line of your eye to create a cat eye look, and then add more pigment using the powder pressed shadow inside the pencil. Next, she uses the smudger to blend the powder up over the lid. To finish the look, she uses Pixi Large Lash Mascara in Bold Black, $18. Another great tip: In order to get mascara truly at the root and lengthen your lashes, make sure you look down as you're applying. Watch the video to see Strand apply the smoky look!
