For the longest time, most of us tended to play it pretty safe when it came to beauty. Neutral nails, pink lips, maybe a colorful eyeshadow or pixie cut now and then if we were feeling wacky.

But over the past few seasons, makeup and hair trends have been going bolder. Maybe it's the Lady Gaga/Nicki Minaj effect, but now we've got neon nail art, tangerine lipstick, and sky blue chalk in our hair -- and it's actually looking way better than we may have once thought. And 2013 looks like it's bringing even more outrageous-but-still-wearable trends our way.

Lavender lips
Spring is always a great time to try a bright lip, and there will be plenty of women wearing corals and pinks, says MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist Christopher Del Castillo. But he suggests going a slightly different route and trying a lavender lip.

"Lavender in general, on eyes and lips, can be worn by anyone, even on women with skin tones who wouldn't normally use it," he says. "It's sort of one of those overlooked colors when it comes to neutrals."

If you have fairer skin, Del Castillo suggests starting with a neutral lipliner (close to your natural lip shade) and then layering a lavender lipstick on top, like MAC Viva Glam Nicki 2 Lipstick, $15. "It makes it look a littler cooler -- more plum-like and wearable," he says.

If you have a darker skin tone, start with a magenta or plum lipliner before applying lavender lipstick for a bolder look, Del Castillo says.

Copper red
Red has been a huge hair color trend for a while, but in 2013, there's a new hue to try. "There's always that one color or hue every year that really strikes us," says Rodney Cutler, Redken Brand Ambassador and owner of Cutler/Redken Salons. "It's this copper red shade right now [think] Jessica Chastain." If you're not ready to go full-on copper red, you could ask your hairstylist for red lowlights instead.

Bold eyeshadow
There's a new way to wear bright shadows, says Del Castillo. "I don't remember doing this for a long time, but this season we were applying strong washes of color on the eyelid one shade all over the lid and contoured into the eye socket," he says. He suggests trying it with a blue-violet or even a fiery red or orange shade and says you can do a sheer wash of color or pack it on for a bolder look.

Strong, polished bangs
There's hardly a celeb on the red carpet that hasn't tried fringe, but Cutler says there's a specific type of bangs you should try in 2013. "We're seeing a lot more structure in haircutting lately," he says. "I've been seeing very strong bangs; sexy bangs, not choppy and piece-y, but chic and polished."
