Why: Those with thick hair beware of this product as, "it doesn't really hold my hair" and "makes my hair very sticky." Others say the best thing about the product is its smell: "I really love the smell of this product and was really hopeful that I would love it. It has no hold whatsoever and it was almost like I was just misting my hair with water. Would not recommend it to anyone." Another agrees saying, "this hairspray will not hold and will make your hair crunchy. The only good thing about it is the smell." One reader adds, "It didn't keep the waves in my hair AT ALL. Plus, [my hair] was left CRISPY and GREASY LOOKING. I don't recommend wasting money on this."

Why: One reader says, "my hair is wavy, and I thought this might help my hair look curly without the use of a curling iron. Wrong. It made my hair crunchy -- even when I curled my hair and used it -- it really did nothing." Another says, "curls of my dreams? Definitely not. My hair was frizzier than I've ever seen it after using this hairspray. I honestly don't know what to do with the rest of the bottle ..." And one woman says, "I tried this thinking I'd find a cheaper alternative to Redken Soft Spin 05. I like the spray option so I can touch up between washing and styling and refresh my curls, but this product did nothing for my hair except leave it dry and slightly frizzy. There was no shine and no curl definition for me -- just crunchy dry hair. I've tried it several times over the past few months, hoping to love it, but nothing has helped. I even use my favorite leave-in conditioner before this product and it doesn't help at all. I am actually going to toss the rest of the bottle and move on to something that actually works."

No. 8: Garnier Fructis Style Surf Spray, $5.99
TotalBeauty.com average member rating: 6.7*
Why: Readers say this product "does nothing for my hair. I feel like I had to use the whole bottle just to get a 'surf' look. No wonder I bought it at the dollar store." Another agrees saying, "If you don't already have waves in your hair, you will never have beachy waves from using this. [In fact,] you won't even get some good texture. Pass." One woman adds, "This product smells good, but made my hair a frizzy mess. I had to rewash it to make it look presentable."

Why: Reviewers say, "this hairspray holds, I will give it that, but it is very dulling and almost adds a spider web-looking effect if you spray too much (definitely not good for updos) and is very flaky when brushed out." Ick. Another reader says, "I don't like how stiff this holds your hair you definitely need to wash your hair if you plan on styling it the next day." And one woman simply states, "I really am not satisfied with Sexy Hair."

Why: One user warns: "Only use if you'll be shampooing soon! That should be the warning on the bottle, because this smelly spray made my hair dirty and dull! I had bigger hopes for this product, since the shampoo and conditioner smell good and do a decent job. After using this product, I was surprised it was made by Nexxus. A cheap mousse would have worked and smelled better than this!" Another woman calls this "mediocre" and one reader elaborates by saying, "I used this protecting spray for a few weeks and basically saw no results. My hair didn't feel especially damaged from heat when I used it, but it didn't feel soft or silky either. It actually left my hair feeling a bit tacky, so I'd recommend a light touch. This might work for someone with really healthy fine hair, but for my thick, coarse hair, I need more conditioning in a heat protector."

Getting whiffs of "vinegar" or "wet paint" are acceptable when you're making salad dressing or redecorating your house, but when they come out of a hairspray bottle, they can be quite gag inducing.

And yes, our readers actually used aforementioned smells to describe the scents of the hairsprays on this list. Our readers have tried and tested the best and worst hair care products on the market, and these are the 12 hairsprays they say are not only horrible smelling (in most cases) but are also best suited for creating over-the-top, sticky, impossible-to-brush-though "Jersey Shore"-like styles.

See the absolute worst hairsprays now.

Don't get us wrong, hairspray, in general, is an essential hairstyling tool. It's key for creating and maintaining any style, from glam waves to a ballerina bun. The hairsprays we love are so great we threw them a party. (Our version of a hairspray party is this best hairsprays list, FYI.) But with the good always comes the bad, which is why we also have to share the 12 hairsprays that our readers say just don't deliver.

Our readers judged these sprays based on how well they held their style, if they delivered on their promises, and, of course, their scents, because nobody wants a hairspray that leaves your hair smelling like "warm poop" (yes, another sent our readers smelled in these sprays). So, do yourself a favor and steer clear of these 12 worst-rated hairsprays. Heck, even Snooki seems to be using a less helmet head-forming spray these days, and if she wouldn't use these products, you shouldn't either.
