Halloween costumes can be tricky. You don't want to look cheesy or lame, but you also don't want to be so creative/weird that no one gets what your costume is. Luckily, we've pulled together some foolproof costume ideas for this year. The best part? Most of them don't require you to buy a costume, just get creative with makeup and the clothes in your closet!

Vampire fever has swept the nation; so don't be surprised if you're not the only one with fangs at this year's Halloween party. But you will look the most authentic with these tips from MAC senior makeup artist Christopher Del Castillo:

To start, apply your regular foundation, or one that's a shade lighter than your skin tone to create a base. Then, apply a white foundation over that (try MAC Face and Body in White, $32, or just use the lightest foundation you can find). Cover your lips with a concealer that's lighter than your skin tone as well.

To get that "I've just been drinking blood" look, apply a dime-sized circle of red lip liner (Del Castillo recommends MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry, $13) to the center of your lower lip. Smack your lips together until the circle is blended.

To get sunken-in cheeks, use a gray/blue shadow (try MAC Eye Shadow in Copperplate, $14.50). Apply it in circular motions just under your cheekbones, blending out towards your ears.

For your eyes, go for a sexy smoky eye (it even works for guys!). Apply a dark eye shadow (like CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Shadow in Shimmering Onyx, $2.82) on the inner corners of your eyes, blending it across your lids and up towards your brows. Use black eyeliner to further darken and emphasize your eyes by lining lash lines and inner rims.

Bonus: For the "Twilight" effect, dust glitter all over your face for that "marble skin look." Try MAC Iridescent Powder in Silver Dusk, $22.

Dressing up as your favorite "Mad Men" duo is a cinch. For Mr. Draper, have your guy wear a suit and slick his hair into a '60s side part (try using a strong hold gel or pomade, like Redken Hardwear 16 Super Strong Gel, $16). For Betty, check out these tips below:

Start with a sheer foundation to even out your skin tone. Then use black gel eyeliner (try Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner, $20) to thinly line your upper lids, winging the ends out a bit. Then apply mascara. Betty usually wears a bold lip color that coordinates with her clothing, so depending on what '60s-style dress you choose, try one of these shades: MAC Lipstick in Vegas Volt, $14 or MAC Lip Pencil in Red or Cherry, $13. Don't forget to add a rosy-pink blush, like MAC Blushcreme in Posey, $18.50.

Obviously, you'll need to break out your trendiest outfit (and your biggest sunglasses) to portray Zoe. To complete the look, check out these makeup tips.

First, either apply foundation that's a shade darker than your skin tone or use copious amounts of bronzer all over to get her tanned skin tone. And not to be mean, but to complete this look, you'll need to draw on some marionette lines (wrinkles from the base of your nose to your lips). To make them look real, use a taupe-colored eyeliner or brow pencil to draw lines on each side of your face. Then use a concealer that's two shades lighter than your skin and blend it on either side of the lines to make that skin look more raised than the wrinkle (be sure to blend well). Finish with setting powder.

For her signature dark lip color, try a burgundy lip pencil, then follow up with a burgundy or dark red lipstick (like Revlon Matte Lipstick in Fabulous Fig, $6.99). Don't bother with much eye makeup, you'll be wearing your gigantic sunglasses all night!
