Before I reach for any other makeup, I always apply BB cream. Makeup artists often refer to this step as "prepping the canvas," and they do it for good reason. I focus the color on my nose, chin, the center of my forehead, and the tops of my cheeks. This gets rid of redness and discoloration without making me feel like I'm wearing a full face of makeup.
Then, I apply concealer under my eyes, around my nose, and anywhere I have a breakout. And to lock it all in place and keep it from creasing, I use a large brush to dust loose powder all over.

The key products
During Fashion Week, I want products with a good amount of coverage, as well as SPF and moisture since I'll be outside between shows. I love Amarte Natural Finish BB Cream, $80, because it has SPF 36, leaves my skin feeling dewy, and covers my freckles better than a tinted moisturizer. Plus, the texture is so blendable, and it has added skin care ingredients.
I'm also using Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Waterproof Concealer, $24, because -- as the name suggests -- it doesn't crease and settle into the fine lines around my eyes. And since it's waterproof, it won't slide down my face when I get a little sweaty racing around from show to show.
I'll admit it: Even though I'm a beauty editor, my makeup could not be more boring.
Each morning I spend exactly seven minutes applying tinted moisturizer, pink blush, black liner, and a few coats of mascara. The result is pretty enough, but it's exactly the same. Every. Single. Day.
But for New York Fashion Week, my go-to routine isn't going to cut it. Of course I want to appear polished and professional when I'm backstage doing interviews, but I also want to look like I know what's going on in the beauty world trend-wise. After all, these are the top makeup artists and hairstylist in the business -- they're the ones who create the trends. I don't want them to think I wasn't paying attention last season.
While I want a look that's cooler than my usual snooze-fest makeup, there's one other requirement: It has to last. During Fashion Week, there will be days when I'm backstage at 7 a.m. and then swinging by an after-party at 11 p.m. -- with barely any time in between to fix my face (or, sadly, take off my heels).
So I've come up with a look that's fun, and I'm using products that are proven to stay put. What do you think -- will the pros be impressed?
