Hot lip color No. 2: Berry
For the women who shy away from a red lip -- but still want to play with color -- Powers says this rich color is a flattering alternative.

To choose the right hue for you:

For fair skin tones: Choose something bright but pink-y. "This should look almost like you've been biting your lips," says Powers. Try Dior Dior Addict Lipstick in Show 778, $28.

For medium skin tones: Go for a true berry hue like a bright raspberry. Try Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in #34, $19.

For dark skin tones: Choose a deep raspberry shade with a sheer texture, like CoverGirl Queen Collection LipPerfection Lipcolor in Regal Raspberry, $6.99.

Hot lip color No. 3: Beige nude
Nude, muted lips are the perfect complement to fall's trendy, smoky eye, says Powers. (You can see how to do a perfect smoky eye here.)

To choose the right shade of beige for you, choose a nude that is similar to your lip color or slightly lighter, says Powers. Also, make sure the color corresponds to your skin's undertone. If you have cool undertones, try a pinky nude like Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Madere, $25. If you have warm or olive undertones try a warmer, more golden nude like Clinique High Impact Lip Colour SPF 15 in In a Nutshell, $14.50.

Hot lip color No. 4: Fuchsia
While bright colors are usually reserved for the warm seasons, matte fuchsia lips are big this season, because they "complement the bright fabrics that are also carrying over from summer," says Powers. "Fuchsia is generally a universally flattering shade that works for all skin tones, but for fall, the key is to pick something a little deeper than what you would wear for summer."

To choose the right hue for you:

For fair and medium skin tones: Go for a bright true fuchsia. Try Dior Dior Addict Lipstick in Collection 865, $28.

For dark skin tones: Opt for a deeper magenta, maybe even one with a little shimmer, like CoverGirl LipPerfection Lipcolor in Burn, $6.99. (Tip: You can also top your fuchsia lip with a little gold gloss.)

Hot lip color No. 5: Metallic
"Metallic makeup in general is huge for fall," says Powers. "Traditionally when people think of metallics, it's all about a smoky eye (see how to wear fall's smoky metallic eye here). But now we're seeing it on the lips as well. It's a great way to add shine and dimension to your lips, and you can even layer a metallic gloss on top of your favorite lipstick for added glamour, or try a lipstick with a metallic finish."

To choose the right hue for you:

For fair skin tones: Opt for a metallic that is either light (like a metallic nude) or more vibrant (like a bright lip color with a metallic finish). "I love Make Up For Ever Lab Shine Lip Gloss in #M8, $18. It's a bright metallic cherry red," says Powers.

For medium skin tones: Any golden-hued lipstick or gloss will look great on you. A fall favorite: CoverGirl Queen Collection Lipcolor Lipstick in Spicy Seduction, $6.99.

For dark skin tones: Stay away from silvers, which tend to be too bright; gold and copper will look more natural. You can also try a dark berry metallic lipstick or gloss. "Deep skin looks incredible in any metallic shade," says Powers. "You can really play with texture and try an opaque metallic gold or copper lipstick as a base." Powers likes Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in #17, $19, and suggests adding your favorite gloss on top.

Hot lip color No. 6: Brick red
"We are seeing lots of rust and brick color trends in clothing, and this is echoed in some of the lip colors as well," says Powers. The rusty brown red lip is a modern take on the traditional red.

To choose the right hue for you:

For fair skin tones: Try a brick red with a matte finish like Revlon Matte Lipstick in In The Red, $6.99.

For medium skin tones: Go for a brick red with a hint of orangey rust, like Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Burnt Red, $23.

For dark skin tones: Try a true brown red, like Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Raisin Berry, $23. For something more natural, go for a deep orange-based earth tone, like Sephora Collection Lip Attitude in Brick Imagine, $12.

While summer was all about the soft pinks and bright corals, lips are getting a bold overhaul for the new season. Fall trends are calling for deep plums and rich mauves for your pout, and you'll find that there's a color for everyone -- even the Chapstick-wearer in the corner who dares to maybe wear tinted lip balm for a night out.

See the fall 2011 lip trends now.

We get it: Bold lipstick can be intimidating. What if it bleeds, flakes, or worse -- leaves red stains on your man's crisp white shirt? Even those of us who've dabbled with the coral colors of summer may find these hues for fall pretty daring. But with all these gorgeous colors, it'd be a crying shame if we didn't partake. That's why we talked to Jessie Powers, Make Up For Ever National Educator, who filled us in on how to wear these fall lip trends. Turns out it's all about choosing the right hue for your skin tone and undertones.

So whether you're a lipstick newbie or bonafide beauty junkie, there's never been a better time to break out of your lip box and experiment. Here's how to do it right.
