Don't remove facial hair
'"Don't remove your facial hair. It'll grow back thicker, like a man's.' As if! I kind of chuckled at that. She's Swedish so she doesn't have it that bad. My other half is Italian, and those genes dominate in me, so I definitely need to remove unwanted hair on a regular basis or face the cruel stereotype of the hairy Italian woman." -- Volta via the Community

Don't use conditioner
"When I was a teen and had disastrously frizzy hair, she said it's because I play with it too much and that conditioners were no good and to not use them. Wrong! And when I whined too much, she would break out the ironing board and the iron and IRON my hair flat. I'll be honest, it was so nice and stick straight (a relief from frizzy hair), but of course I had to chop all of my dead hair off after a month of this routine." -- maria_longfellow via the Community

Cake on the makeup
"I have freckles, and my mom ALWAYS told me to wear thick foundation to cover them up, so I've always been self-conscious about them. She took me to get a few removed (the pain was NOT worth it), and even now, she comments on how I need to hide my freckles better every time I see her. But of course now I realize that she's the only one who seems to think that way." -- JanieTB via the Community

Rock a unibrow
"I had a unibrow when I was younger so I plucked constantly to open a gap. My mom told me I shouldn't pluck my eyebrows because Frida Kahlo had a uni-brow and she thought it was beautiful. It's safe to say I still pluck to this day -- thanks though, Ma." -- Briana Lawrence via Facebook

Don't wash your face
"In high school, I had terrible acne. My mom suggested trying a method that had worked for her friend in high school: Not washing your face, just rinsing with water. Now that I know more about skin I can see why it worked for her friend (who was over-drying her face and needed to let it rebalance), but it only made my skin way worse. Finally, she wised up and took me to a dermatologist, thank goodness!" -- scarrillo via the Community

Good old mom. Not only did she pack on the pounds and give up her fun, carefree life so we could cook for nine months in her womb, but she also loved us even through the "You don't understand mes" and "I HATE yous" of our tumultuous teen years. What a trooper.

Skip to see the worst beauty tips readers got from their moms now.

She taught us so much as well -- invaluable things, which we're sure you still hold near and dear. But while mom was likely spot on when it came to things like not talking with your mouth full and brushing your hair, she probably spewed some not-so-awesome advice as well. And we're not talking unfortunate truths like "Money doesn't grow on trees" and "Dont make that face or it'll freeze that way" -- we're talking about truly bad beauty tips.

Whoa, whoa, whoa -- bad beauty tips from dear, sweet mom? You bet. After asking thousands of readers on Facebook, Twitter, and our Community, we were shocked to hear just how bad some of the mother to daughter beauty advice was. So shocked, and admittedly amused, that we decided to compile the best of the worst beauty tips from our readers' moms. Turns out there are times when you should take the whole "mother knows best" bit with a grain of salt.
