Amanda Seyfried's Accessorized Bun
Best for: Mid-length hair of all textures, says Schlenger.

Schlenger's how-to: To prep the hair, blow-dry with a volumizing mousse (try Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Mousse, $3.99) lifting at the root and polishing the ends with a natural bristle brush. Backcomb the top section of hair from the crown to hairline. Pull hair back in a high ponytail, keeping volume at the top and tension on the sides. Wrap one-inch sections of the ponytail around two fingers, allowing pieces to slip out for texture. Secure with bobby pins and finish with a headband two inches back from the hairline to break up the volume.

Kate Upton's Girly-Glam Bun
Best for: This style can be achieved with mid- to long-length hair that's been blown out.

Robles' how-to: Blow out hair for a smooth, voluminous finish. (Try Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse to really pump up the volume). Next, section your hair, making a u-shape on the top of your head (from the bangs to the center of head, top only). Create a low ponytail with the remaining hair and twist it tightly. Wrap the twisted hair around the center of the ponytail until it is in the shape of a bun, and secure tightly with bobby pins. Spray it with a hairspray and then smooth it with a little bit of wax.

Tease the top section towards the direction (left or right) of your choice. Rub a little more wax into your hands and start pulling your hair back, gathering it all together. Wrap the rest of your hair around your bun and secure with pins.

Miley Cyrus' Messy Bun
Best for: Curly or wavy hair, says Schlenger.

Schlenger's how-to: Start by backcombing the crown area. Secure a ponytail at the center back of the head, leaving out the front hairline. Ball up the tail, bringing it towards the base. Set the bun with pins, letting loose ends fall out. Any long pieces can be wrapped around the bun and secured with pins. Loosely brush the curly hairline back with your fingers, leaving height and volume. Spray with hairspray to hold, and secure longer hair with French pins.

Kim Kardashian's Sleek Bun
Best for: With a polished blowout, curly or straight hair will work equally well.

Schlenger's how-to: Prep hair with a high-shine smoothing serum (try Biolage Smoothing Serum, $14.99) and blow-dry hair away from the face. Secure a tight ponytail at the center back of your head and separate the ponytail into two sections. Clip the bottom section out of the way temporarily. Loop the top section downward and secure with pins under the base of the ponytail. Then use the bottom section to wrap around the base of the bun and secure with another pin. Finish with a shine spray all over for a glam look.

Nina Dobrev's Topknot/Ballerina Bun Hybrid
Best for: Long hair that's been blown out for a smooth look.

Robles' how-to Flip your head upside down and gather your hair into a high ponytail. Smooth the hair on the back of your head with a bristle brush (tip: apply hairspray on the brush before you brush your hair). Tightly secure the ponytail with a hair tie and tease your pony. Then lightly go back over it with your bristle brush to smooth it without taking the tease out. Next, slowly wrap your pony around the base and tuck in any hairs that are sticking out. Secure with bobby pins. Finally, mist on a hairspray and apply a hair wax for a smooth finish.

From the runway to the red carpet, the bun hairstyle has been influencing women since its first appearance in ancient Greece. While it has taken on many forms (ballerina, knot, braided) and meanings (in Chinese history, a woman's bun revealed her marital status), it is a true style staple. A go-to for a polished look -- or even just to disguise a bad hair day.

Right now the bun is seeing sexy updates at every turn. Hot starlets (or really, their stylists) are reinventing the wheel, creating new, cute ways to wrap hair around a ponytail.

So go ahead -- put some bravado behind that bun. Here's how.
