Science Says: Breast Implants Improve Women's Sex Lives

Women say, "Uh, really?"
Sometimes science comes up with some pretty ridiculous things, right? Like these Brazilian researchers who found that women with breast implants experienced increased sexual pleasure. Scientists followed a group of 45 women -- yes, that's right, 45 -- who planned to get implants. Thirty-six reported improved sexual satisfaction.

But hold up. Let's think about this for a second. "When we have exerted a great effort, spent a great deal of money and effort and time on something, we tend to justify that effort," said Tomi-Ann Roberts, a distinguished professor of psychology at Colorado College. "Our good feeling is increased because of the effort, not the thing itself." It's also important to note that the increased sexual benefit was also contingent upon not experiencing postsurgical stretch marks, which is a harsh reality for many women.

Naturally, plastic surgeons are falling all over themselves over the news. "I think that the female breast is a very important part of a woman's body, in terms of how a woman feels about herself in public, how her clothes fit and how she feels about herself sexually," said Dr. David Reath, chair of the public education committee of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). "It's very common for a woman post-surgery to say she feels more confident, that her outward body now fits her inward persona." [Health Day]
