Forget Cars and Wallets, Smart Thieves Are Stealing Hair Extensions

And they're selling them to hair salons across the country
Our insatiable desire for perfect hair has spawned a new wave of thievery: People are now robbing beauty supply stores -- often at gunpoint -- and stealing thousands of dollars worth of human hair extensions.

The most recent robbery was in Chicago on Monday, but stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, and Pennsylvania have been hit as well. Last year, a beauty supply store was robbed and $230,000 worth of hair extensions was taken.

Once the hair is stolen, thieves are selling it to salons or even out of their cars. Since there are no bar codes or any way to track the extensions, it's impossible to know where they came from (although if you're buying stuff out of someone's trunk, you can probably assume it's sketchy).

Want to know if your hair extensions are stolen property? Ask your salon where they buy them, or buy them yourself directly from a beauty supply store and bring them with you to the salon for application.
